Yellowstone Supervolcano Making Strange Rumblings

Steam rises from hot springs in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, in a 2002 file photo.

Supervolcanoes can sleep for centuries or millennia before producing incredibly massive eruptions that can drop ash across an entire continent.

One of the largest supervolcanoes in the world lies beneath Yellowstone National Park, which spans parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.

The geothermal plant would certainly produce power - and would get wiped out if the volcano did go off.

As with global warming, sometimes people forget how small humans and human works are, on the planetary scale.

Right On, Buddy! If you remember, back in the 90s, that volcano in the Philippines erupted. It wasn't a real big deal, even for the proximity but, it lowered the summertime temperatures in the US by a good 3 to 5 degrees and blocked out most of the sunlight for weeks. A Yellowstone eruption would likely wipe out a large portion of life on Earth. We would essentially be DOOMED!

... and it's the fault that's abnormal, not their thinking?

They are correct in their thinking because it is Bush's Fault.

We need a super volcano to spew billions of tons of ash into the atmosphere. It will stop the global warming and give us some global cooling. Then we can all drive Hummers without guilt. /sarcasm

I don't know ....

"the bulging Yellowstone hotspot north of the Tetons is pushing against the north edge of Jackson Hole and jamming it against the mountains."

Just don't sound right.

What magazine did this come from, or is this what Joe Wilson found out about?

I'm confused.

"The Yellowstone caldera is expanding because that's where all of Al's "Carbon Offsets" go!"

LOL! Thanks! And your tag is great too! I say let's do some weeding right now! Roundup!

"Generally there is warning before a modern volcano erupts (earthquakes, lava bulges etc)."

The problem here is that Yellowstone is an old fashioned volcano with running boards and a hand-crank starter.

God that movie was awful.

Are you kidding? I enjoyed it. Classic escapism.

I could do without the cliche racism in that one scene, though.

When you drive up through Idaho, craters of the moon, you can see at least three previous lava flows that are at least 10 to 20 feet thick.

They came from Yellowstone in the past, and so a new one will come and flow over them in the future.

No, they came from other volcanos. See here.

The dramatic showdown between the lava flow and the fire hoses just didn't do it for me.
