Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams was re-elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly as Sinn Fein appeared on course to remain the major Catholic-backed party in the British territory, according to results Thursday.
Adams, 58, topped the voting in his longtime power base of Catholic west Belfast. He was among the first declared winners for the 108-member assembly following Wednesday's election to find out which Protestant and Catholic parties will control the assembly and hold the key to revived power-sharing in the territory.
Sinn Fein activists cheered wildly in the major ballot-counting center, the King's Hall conference center in south Belfast, as Adams took the winner's podium. Nearby activists from Protestant parties booed or stood stony-faced.
The vote-counting is likely to take two days before all winners are declared. Northern Ireland's complex system of proportional representation allows voters to pick candidates in order of preference, requiring ballots to be counted several times.
I know, I should let them get to me, TC! :)
I can't figure why they are posting such crap on an allegedly comservative site.
Yup, they could teach (and probably have taught) Al Qaida a thing or to!
:)
From wikipedia:
Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA; more commonly referred to as the IRA, the Provos, or by some of its supporters as the Army or the 'RA) is an Irish Republican left-wing paramilitary organisation that, until the Belfast Agreement, sought to end Northern Ireland's status within the United Kingdom and bring about a United Ireland. Since its emergence in 1969, its stated aim has been the overthrow of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and their replacement by a sovereign socialist all-island Irish state.
"left-wing" and "Socialist" and Freepers are supporting them? Not to mention the terrorist acts they commit!
Neither is ok to slander someone she doesn't even know.
Something that's completely lost on them!
So, how are they gonna keep Ireland a lily-pure Gaelic nation if they're against "racism" and open the country up to unlimited immigration from everywhere but England???
Starting in the early 60's the IRA started providing instructors for Soviet funded camps in northern Africa and the middle east (at that time Syria). It was only then that effective terror bombing tactics started becoming a primary weapon in the jihadist armory.
It's very easy to trace the bombs killing our people in Iraq back to the efforts of these fine Irish volunteers.
So when do us American Rednecks get a Commie "war of national liberation?" Why don't you intercede with your Commie buddies for us?
What the Commies see in the Irish and the Quebecois that they don't see in rednecks is beyond me.
That is true - curious how Sinn Fein oppose US military flights stopping in Shannon!
How many centuries has England been terrorizing Northern Ireland, pally?
Admit it, you secretly admire the guys who blow up abortionists in this country too, don't you?
Sinn Fein/IRA are pro-abortion and pro-homosexual. But that doesn't keep old-fashioned "Ancient Order of Hibernians" types ("yellow dog" Democrats) from supporting them.
Of course, American Irish Catholic Democrats (SF/IRA's main US supporters) are still living in the nineteenth century and don't really care much for defending traditional marriage and the unborn. They're still fighting "scabs."
Sinn Fein, as best I can tell, are a fascist-leftist hybrid.
Oh my!
I_T I understand your passion but you got to remember this is simply an anonymous message board. There is no convincing some as you already know. So better to say your peace and ensure it's part of the history of the thread. I say this as a FRiend who doesn't want to see your account banned for no good reason.
Alas, Bill Clinton brought peace to Northern Ireland and a million flowers have bloomed. There's no going back now I_T, the terrorist have been negotiated with not only in defiance of right minded people on both sides of the Irish Sea but in apathy towards their objections.
Gerry Adams, a man not even allowed to speak on TV just a few years ago, was elected by people he and his henchmen would just as soon stick a shiv into. They too deserve your fury... or maybe your pity since they are so blinded by this devil.
Fret not the anonymous name calling. Fret for the future of the Republic where many people also show a willingness to vote for a Socialist terror thug despite their new found prosperity.
You're right, I should not let them get to me, but I despise the fact they are spreading propaganda around the Internet, got stuck in a battle over at Liberty Post, too - my complaints fell on deaf ears, though maybe 'Goldi-Lox' just didn't see/read my ping! ;)
The IRA popularized in all the favorite old Irish drinking songs has no connection with the murderous organization represented by Sinn Fein. The IRA was officially disbanded when Ireland gained it's independence from England. When Ireland became a nation it was known the victory wasn't perfect (the six northern counties) but everyone was tired of the killing and strife. It was decided, and agreed to by the IRA, to accept the creation of the new Irish nation and work for inclusion of the six northern counties through negotiation.
It was a splinter faction, known as the Provisional Wing, that refused to accept what they considered an imperfect victory and who then declared war on Ireland itself. They started a civil war that was quickly put down then succeeded in murdering Michael Collins...the father of the IRA and person most responsible for winning Ireland it's freedom.
The Provos then went completely underground and have had a murderous heritage every since. Somehow along the way the real title of that organization, the Provisional Wing of the IRA got shortened to IRA.
They are not the IRA of song and history...they are murdering scum.
countreegurl - banned or suspended, battle kinda won.....
I'm not saying we've been angels, but compared to the terrorists sinn fein ira or any other republican seperatist group, we have been fighting the right battle, to keep northern Ireland a part of the united kingdom, where it belongs.
It was a splinter faction, known as the Provisional Wing, that refused to accept what they considered an imperfect victory..
There was no PIRA til the early 70s, between the Treaty and then, they were simply called the IRA, during the Civil War they were called 'Anti Treaty forces' or 'Irregulars'.
The rest is accurate, though, thanks! :)
Outta here... for tonight.
Right on!
