McCain Won't Even Be A Bridesmaid
AOL News ^ | March 4, 2007 | John Mullaney

Remember the old expression, "Always a Bridesmaid never a bride"? It seems like Senator John McCain may not even come in second when all the votes are counted in the Republican primaries. When I talk to people about John McCain, I find that many are wondering whatever happened to the John McCain of the 2000 election. Conversations like these started about one month ago. McCain looked like he was locking in all the right people. Problem is, he forgot the independent voter while he made friends with his enemies from the past.

John McCain missed the Conservative Conservative Action Conference (CPAC) because he was on an extensive fund-raising tour. Robert Novak reports that when McCain's staff told CPAC that he would not be able to attend the conference, they never mentioned the tour. In other words, they think he avoided the conference. The result, he finished fifth in the CPAC straw poll. Rudy Giuliani (liberal) came in second but when combining first and second place votes, Rudy came in first. The man who just won't go away is Mitt Romney. He is a reformed liberal who wins the CPAC straw vote. Of the three, McCain is the true conservative. He has lost his original base.

Now, lets turn to the rest of the voters. Where are they going. In a recent Newsweek Magazine Survey, Giuliani held a 25% point lead over McCain. The lead keeps growing. McCain admirers from 2000 have grown disgusted with his attempts to sell his soul for the White House. Giuliani has not played that game and it seems that his approach is working. This is who I am. Love me or leave me. McCain should have done the same.

The problem, if his performance at the CPAC is any indication, is that he makes watching a snail race look exciting. He also seems to have a tendency to lecture.

McCain has the same chance of becoming president as I do.

I'll continue to tilt at windmills. I'm pulling for Duncan Hunter.

Ted Kennedy killed someone while in a drunken stupor. Please don't compare Rudy to him.

yes, that is Rudy's style. more of a conversational approach, rather then the "booming oratory" type of speeches.

"We must draft Newt Gingrich, it seems.

You can draft him, but he won't get my vote.

Did Duncan Hunter show up anywhere in this? Seemed to me a day or two ago he was coming on very well; apologies for just beginning to pay attention.

John McCain missed the Conservative Conservative Action Conference (CPAC)

Not sure what impact this has.. If the author would bother to check I think he'll find McCain didn't attend in 99 but crushed Bush in the NH primary something like 49-31. CPAC is probably over rated somewhat.

You parsed his words to create a statement he didn't make. He said:

I like Giuliani's stance on foreign affairs and the war against terrorism, but otherwise, it'd be like nominating Ted Kennedy. Do we really want that?

I think it's a valid observation that on most social issues Giuliani is significantly to the left of most Freepers, and that's what 2ndDivisionVet said. He acknowledged some conservative credentials. As to your statement about him believing gun rights are a state issue, he definitely should have made that point at CPAC, and according to reports I've read, he stayed far away from Gays, Guns and God. I'm still open to Rudy, but would need assurance beyond what I've seen that he won't be part of a gun grab.

Keep and eye on McCain to see if he pulls a "Ross Perot" and runs as a third party candidate. That was the only way that Bill Clinton got elected.

It is also be the only way that Hillary can win.

Good luck with that.

Newt said yesterday he will have an announcement Sept. 30.

Dude, I really don't give a flip about my credibility with you, and if you'll read my post, I was quoting another Freeper. It wasn't my statement.

Of the three, McCain is the true conservative.

I must confess that I stopped reading there.

I'd vote for Hillary before I'd vote for McPain. At least I'd know what to expect.
