Some Conservatives Like Newt For President

CNSNews.com) - In the first of at least two 2008 presidential straw polls scheduled for release this week, members of the conservative Citizens United have thrown their support behind non-candidate Newt Gingrich.

The unscientific poll of more than 2,500 of the group's members found that 31 percent would vote for the former House Speaker if the 2008 Republican presidential nomination were held today. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani ranked second with 25 percent of the vote.

As Cybercast News Service previously reported, Gingrich has been critical of politicians announcing their candidacy nearly two years before the general election. He has said he will announce his intentions in September, less than 6 months before the first presidential primaries.

"The conservative movement is thirsty for a leader with Ronald Reagan's vision, passion and unique ability to convey what is great about America," CU President David Bossie said in a release announcing the results. "We want someone who inspires us."

Bossie said the poll "suggests that if he were to enter the presidential race, Newt Gingrich could be the heir to President Reagan whom conservatives are looking for."

The straw poll results come while a similar poll is being conducted at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the annual gathering of conservative activists taking place in Washington, D.C. Results from that poll will be released Saturday evening.

Gingrich and Giuliani dominated the field of 13 candidates, together gathering more than half of all support. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney came in third place with 10 percent of the votes. Arizona Sen. John McCain came in fourth with 8 percent.

I like Newt...but Duncan Hunter, I think, is the more conservative, thus is my top pick.

A Hunter/Newt would be great, or even a possible Newt/Hunter ticket.

The debate's over. There's nobody else out there that can win on the Republican side. I'm tellin you Giuliani is the only hope for the Republicans to keep the White House

So, did someone intall a string with a ring in your back? And when someone pulls it, one of twenty Rudy talking points comes out? Whether the talking point is relevant to the thread or not?

I think 1992 is a very apt comparison. Bush the Elder lurched leftward and lost that year by splitting the party. Just like Rudy would if he won.

If Newt is the best the GOP can offer, they are in deep, deep trouble.

We may be in trouble, but Newt is head and shoulders above the three RINOs that the MSM are promoting. It's not like the Dems don't have deep, deep trouble also.

One of the major parties is going to win the presidency. I'd rather give the voters a contrast in their choices (conservative vs liberal) instead of Democrat vs Democrat Lite.

I'm not willing to vote for one liberal to avoid another.

The more I am looking at Newt I think he will come in late summer or early fall say better labor day and Halloween. Then it becomes a new ballgame.

Newt Gingrinch will never, ever, ever be the President of the Unites States. Never. So why are people wasting their time?

I think Newt is too much of a lightning rod. And I think he knows that.

I'm not so sure about that. We'll have to see if/when he decides to jump in.

Now if we could just convince him to toss his hat in the ring. He would punk slap Giuliani or McCain in the primaries.
-----
The MSM will never let their mindless readers forget about Newt's private life, but what they will not note is his real record of conservatism, patriotism, his skill as a patriotic politician (a minority in Washington), his willingness to tell the MSM where to go, his willingness to openly call out Hitlery for who and what she is, including her RAP SHEET. This country sorely needs a real conservative in the White House, and Newt would do that position justice.

If I thought that Newt would survive the MSM onslaught he'd suffer if he was the nominee, I'd be behind him. But I don't think he can politically survive the "Gingrich who stole Christmas" stories that will become a daily fixture of the MSM until Election Day.

This thought process is the same as the dems on Iraq - if we just nominate a good RINO, then the press will treat them nice. Geesh! Newt in debates with the Hildabeast will crush her.

I did not say he doe snot have his scars, but he has less the Rino Rudy. He also will IMHO unite the conservative base and has the connections to the grassroots to pull money and people together over a very short time. Keep an eye out he is basically campaigning now, he is out doing the lecture and speaking circuit supporting his new book. He is reportedly ( I have not had the pleasure of hearing him myself) sounding like he is campaigning.

I've been saying this since the early 1990s. The more real Americans learn about this guy, the more they will like him. IMO

(Except those obsessed with his divorce.)

Debating Rule # 27: When a participant states that "the debate is over", the debate usually isn't over.

I mean, seriously, the debate is over more than 10 months before the Iowa caucus?! Give me a break. The debate's over when we have a nominee.

"Newt Gingrinch will never, ever, ever be the President of the Unites States"

Why is that? Because you don't like him and are not going to give him your OK?

Newt would probably win a debate with Hillary the same way Richard Nixon won his debate with John Kennedy. It is all well and good to be able to win a debate on points, but Newt comes across as too professorial and that would negate Hillary's tendency to talk down to people.
