The Drudge Report is known mostly as a wildly popular news outlet. Drudge lashed out at Gore after Gore's movie, "An Inconvenient Truth," took the Oscar for Best Documentary.
Citing a press release by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, Drudge reports that Gore's Tennessee household uses twenty times as much energy as the average person's home, and that the former vice president's energy consumption has increased since the release of his anti-global warming film. "The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy," the report says. "In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh -- more than 20 times the national average."
Gore shot back at Drudge Monday through an interview with the liberal Web site ThinkProgress:
Responding to Drudge, Gore's office told ThinkProgress:
1) Gore's family has taken numerous steps to reduce the carbon footprint of their private residence, including signing up for 100 percent green power through Green Power Switch, installing solar panels, and using compact fluorescent bulbs and other energy saving technology.
2) Gore has had a consistent position of purchasing carbon offsets to offset the family's carbon footprint -- a concept the right-wing fails to understand. Gore's office explains:
What Mr. Gore has asked is that every family calculate their carbon footprint and try to reduce it as much as possible. Once they have done so, he then advocates that they purchase offsets, to bring their footprint down to zero.
And then there's this comparison Rush Limbaugh made between Gore and President Bush on his radio program yesterday: "Compare Gore's mansion and Bush's modest 4,000 square foot little house on a ranch in Crawford. Who is it that is actually walking the walk here when it comes to conserving energy? It is not Al Gore."

Found this on the Suzuki web site.
"Additionality is extremely important, as the entire concept of offsetting - i.e. purchasing greenhouse gas reduction credits from a project elsewhere to neutralize one's own emissions - is based on the premise that those reductions wouldn't have happened otherwise."
"Wouldn't have happened otherwise." That shows what a scam this thing is.
Man on the street Wednesday: "Excuse me, sir, what's a carbon footprint? How many carbon offsets did you purchase last year? What is your hand doing inside that raincoat?? ..."
Does this mean that since my Bible Class teacher has stopped smoking that I can smoke his share?
Judging from his girth, algore would have a mighty big carbon footprint.
Please send me $999.99 everyday Monday thru Friday, or else I will continue to drive to work, use my computer, use the bathroom (I flush a lot), and eat a big lunch (with plenty of meat).
"This Global warming sham is big business. Set up a website, get money from liberals, plant a few trees...."
I'd be willing to bet a large chunk of cash that Al Gore owns a piece of the action.
This astonishing last line from the WaPo article isn't necessarily bashing conservatives (although they take their shots in the article). But, the bottom line is that they are not coming down on the side of Earth Tone Al and they are actually agreeing with us.
That's exactly what I thought about when I heard about "purchasing" offsets. It's paying someone else for your sacrifice.
"In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh -- more than 20 times the national average."
Gore: "I demand a recount."
I think you might have just hit the nail on the head. Al must have his sweaty hands in on this scam. I heard that all the gift bags at the Oscars had carbon offsets in them, so that all the Hollywood hypocrites could live their lavish lives' carbon neutral for the year, and not feel guilty. Meanwhile, Starvin Marvin in Africa, is not allowed to have a fire for the rest of his life because he is not allowed to cut down any trees.
I'm betting that, after "the kiss", Tipper spends as much time in the house in Arlington as she can, while Gore pretends to live in his environmental freak show in Nashville.
As another poster pointed out, yesterday, purchasing carbon offsets is really purchasing carbon indulgences, just like the indulgences sold by the Catholic church during the Spainish Inquistion. So, we have carbon indulgences during the Postmodern Environmental Inquistion.
My father was a conservative ...He was also a hunter . He gave money to Ducks Unlimited which bought raw land and let it stay natural so that ducks could breed. The hunters were better stewards than the environmentalists, because they were motivated to put their money into solving the problem instead of whining. Al Gore and his believers should try it.
She asked you to explain what it was....not make a dim comment.
Open Microsoft Word and design one.
Using a globe graphic to show your concern for the environment will be a nice touch. Baby animals, especially polar bears, are also good.
Go to Staples/Office Depot for some REALLY NICE paper - I recommend 100% cotton rag.
Load up your color printer. It has to be a laser printer, inkjet won't work.
If you'd like to add gold trimmings, your local craft store will have gold paint and very small brushes.
Remember, neatness counts!
Sell them on eBay.
Cool!
CA....
That's exactly what I thought about when I heard about "purchasing" offsets. It's paying someone else for their sacrifice, but doing it in your name. Just the opposite of someone like the president who does it quietly. Himself. Without fanfare.
I need to buy me a couple of hundred acres of pine pulp trees here in NC. Then sucker some hollywood types into paying for the planting and upkeep.
The best part is that I get to cut them down to be made into editions of the New York Times that will eventually trap all that carbon in a landfill.
Basically, if you got the bank...you make a donation [commensurate to the amount of energy you used] to an alternative energy company [leaf gas, windmill farm, boisonberry lighter fluid etc, etc.]...thats all...and presto chango, you magically did not polute the planet in the first place.
Just a scam to fund private alternative energy companies.
Now, imagine talk radio offsets.
"I think you might have just hit the nail on the head. Al must have his sweaty hands in on this scam."
Thank you. I don't have the time but I bet some research will reveal that one or more of those organizations that supposedly collect money for carbon credits has Al's fingerprints on it somehow. He's not creating the scam without financial interests.
