Nationalists urge Serbia to abandon EU plans, quit UN if Kosovo gains independence

BELGRADE, Serbia: Serbia's ultra-nationalists said Friday the Balkan country should quit the United Nations and abandon its efforts to join the European Union if Kosovo becomes independent.

The comments illustrate the pressure nationalists are putting on Serbia's pro-Western leaders, who have promised to participate in the final U.N.-brokered talks on Kosovo currently being held in Vienna, Austria, although they have rejected the possibility of independence for Kosovo, which is considered the heartland of Serbian statehood and religion.

"If the EU grabs Kosovo from Serbia, we are saying publicly that Serbia must never enter that integration," said Tomislav Nikolic, deputy leader of the Serbian Radical Party — the biggest group in Serbia's parliament.

Speaking after meeting with a delegation from Russia's parliament, the Duma, Nikolic said Serbia "must quit its U.N. membership" if the Security Council accepts the U.N. plan.

officials have hinted that they would consider offering Serbia a shortcut to EU membership if it reconsiders its staunch opposition to Kosovo's independence.

The U.N. Security Council will have the final say on the document, and if there is no agreement in the talks, it could impose a solution.

Nikolic said the Radicals "hope that Russia will veto" the plan in the Security Council.

"If Russia does not do it, we will fight (for Kosovo) ourselves," Nikolic said.

The Radicals have repeatedly said they would urge Serbia's military intervention in Kosovo if the majority ethnic Albanian-populated province becomes independent.

Nikolic, whose party emerged the strongest after last month's elections, said the Radicals hoped to form the country's new government "so we can defend Kosovo."

I think Serbia was wronged by the West, but I think it is wrong here. Let'em go if they want to go. Just as I would not object to New England seceding from the US.

Not today. I'd prefer to throw their asses out. But if 100 years from now they were the clear majority then yes I would. Why the hell would I want to be a part of the same country as them>

Kosovo is Serbian Jerusalem, it is not a piece of land, it is much more. If Jews and Christians let Jerusalem to Muslims... not even than Serbs would let go Kosovo.

Kosovo is Serbian Jerusalem

OK... I don't know enough there to comment, so I will leave the rest of the discussion to you. As a general rule though, I don't see anything important in historical borders.

When history of a nation goes back to 7th (seventh) century, it becomes important

Where do you live then? I got a bunch of guys who want to take over your home just by showing up and claiming it to be theirs.

Good enough for the Serbs in Kosovo, good enough for you!

Is that the case that they just showed up out of the blue and claimed it? If so, then I stand corrected.

Do you remember when the Albanian economy collapsed in the 1980's (sort of an obscure item if you don't follow Balkan events)? This began a mass exodus of Albanians into Kosovo seeking employment. At that time, they began a campaign of violence against the Serbs that was documented by David Binder of the New York Times (of all things!).

As the Albanian illegal immigrants, mostly Muslims, became increasingly violent, the Serbs launched a very effective anti-guerilla campaign. It wasn't until the Albanians used a very effective PR campaign, culminating in the Racak massacre/hoax, and got the West involved on the wrong side that they gained an effective military hold on the area.

Yes, it is worth noting because it collapsed due to ponzi schemes. It is a good idea of what is facing the social security system.

Well then I stand totally corrected.

Black is white, up is down, and David Binder was documenting the results of the 1997 collapse of the Albanian economy in the 1980's.

It's all good.

I think Serbia was wronged by the West, but I think it is wrong here. Let'em go if they want to go. Just as I would not object to New England seceding from the US.

The parallel is not as close as it appears. Kosovo's muslim population percentage today is the result of two factors that have ensured that the region has become separatist.

1. Kosovar muslim terrorists have been waging a campaign to forcefully drive Serb residents out of the region for almost a century, and they've done so with an unfortunately high success. The two biggest waves of Serb migration out of Kosovo were in World War II when Hitler invaded and the muslims sided with him, and in 1999 when Clinton invaded and the muslims sided with him. Hitler murdered tens of thousands of Kosovar Serbs in his concentration camps, and drove hundreds of thousands of them into Serbia. Clinton's war produced another 100,000 Serb exodus in its wake.

2. Since the Serb exodus of the region, Albanians from Albania proper have flooded the region and snatched up former Serb land.

The result is that Kosovo is about 95% muslim today. But it wasn't always like that, and in fact it didn't become that lopsided until very recently in history. It has always had muslim majority regions since they invaded in the 1400's, but it used to also have Serb regions.

A better analogy to New England seceding would be to imagine if all the Hispanic inhabitants of New Mexico started terror attacking the Anglos, pushing them north into Colorado, opening the border to let more Mexicans in to bolster their ranks, and then petitioned the UN to replace the state with the new nation of Aztlan.
