Clinton saw apology for war vote as insincere, aides say
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | February 18, 2007 | Patrick Healy, New York Times

One of the most important decisions that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., made about her bid for the presidency came late last year, when she ended a debate in her camp over whether she should repudiate her 2002 vote authorizing military action in Iraq.

Several advisers, friends and donors said in interviews that they had urged her to call her vote a mistake to appease anti-war Democrats, who play a critical role in the nominating process. Yet Clinton herself, backed by another faction, never wanted to apologize -- even if she viewed the war as a mistake -- arguing that an apology would be a gimmick.

...."... advisers think she should've uttered the three magic words -- 'I was wrong' -- but she believes it's self-evident that the Senate Iraq resolution was based on false intelligence and never should've come to a vote," said Richard Holbrooke, the former U.N. ambassador and an adviser to Clinton on foreign policy.

....Clinton believes that reversing course on Iraq would invite the charge of flip-flopping that damaged Kerry or provoke the kind of accusations of political expediency that hung over then-Vice President Al Gore in 2000 and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, in the 1990s, several advisers said. She has argued to associates in private discussions that Gore and Kerry lost, in part, because they could not convince enough Americans that they were resolute on national security, the associates said.

Clinton's image as a strong leader, in turn, is critical to her hopes of becoming the nation's first female president. According to one adviser, her internal polling indicates that a high proportion of Democrats see her as strong and tough, both assets for a female candidate who is seeking to become commander in chief. Apologizing might hurt that image, this adviser said.

"Always about POLITICAL ADVANTAGE"

Political advantage, sentence parsing, semantic sleights of hand, legal loopholes.

Clintonian politics at its best.

"she believes it's self-evident that the Senate Iraq resolution was based on false intelligence and never should've come to a vote,"

Really now! Who pumped your husband up to make the following claims in an address to the American people? circa: 1998

"CLINTON: Good evening.

Earlier today, I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors.

The hard fact is that so long as Saddam remains in power, he threatens the well-being of his people, the peace of his region, the security of the world.

The best way to end that threat once and for all is with a new Iraqi government -- a government ready to live in peace with its neighbors, a government that respects the rights of its people."

IOW, the Rodhamster has no sincere conviction regarding the war on terrorist, the military, or the war to stabilize Iraq, she only has political calculs for her image and the manipulation potential with prospective liberal voters. I'm glad she cleared that up for us.

Oh please, she hates the military. Lately, she sits on the fence - never for and against anything. A whore for votes. Her being CIC is a punch in the gut to our troops.

Will the real Hillary Clinton please step forward?

She's trying to be the best Conservative, the best socialist, and the best communist all at the same time.

During her senate campaign, she even tried being Jewish. Barrack Oboma has already claimed the Christian/Muslim thing this election, so Hillary is trying to steal the "black" thing away from him (after all, her husband Bill is African American - or so he claims).

I don't think it matters to the dems. All she has to continue to say is she is going to 'TAKE' profits from "rich' people and give it to them. She'll get 150% of the votes.(remember most of them vote twice)

They know the threat. She can't say it was wrong. She's between a rock and the loony-left primary voters.

No doubt. The bottom line is they want power back and they'll back her if she's the top of the ticket.

In the meantime, her Democrat opponents better be able to duck and dodge.

Very true. In November, the democrats ran on....nothing. The democrats voted for them anyway. The rest were sending a message to Iraq. War or no war, the democrat base just wanted their free handouts.
