Jonah Goldberg: Inherit the Wind. What if it takes a Democrat? (Maybe a Democrat should win)
National Review ^ | Feb. 16, 2007 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 02/17/2007 9:22:00 PM PST by FairOpinion

This wisp of a notion is simply this: Maybe a Democrat should win in 2008.

Personally, I don’t believe in this poltergeist, at least not yet. But every now and then, I must confess, I do shiver from its touch.

The idea goes something like this: If you believe that the war on terror is real — really real — then you think it is inevitable that more and bloodier conflicts with radical Islam are on the way, regardless of who is in the White House. If the clash of civilizations is afoot, then the issues separating Democrats and Republicans are as pressing as whether the captain of the Titanic is going to have fish or chicken for dinner. There’s a showdown coming. Period. Full stop. My task isn’t to convince you that this view is correct (though I basically believe it is), but merely that it is honestly and firmly held by many on the right and by a comparative handful on the left.

Agreed. Goldberg's scenario is a coward's way to "get" the Democrats. The ultimate in cynicism is hoping the Democrats get elected so they make a mess of things, including letting an American city get vaporized. This nation can't afford the Democrats back in power, and they need to be defeated in the next election, not let back in so they can "learn on the job."

The people will eventually hear Hillary Clinton in debates and elsewhere and will realize how mean and nasty she is just by hearing her extremely annoying voice or looking at her nasty wide open scary eyes that roll all over her face. Before they even know her left wing socialist ideology or her flip flops they will realize how nasty she is and the majority of voters will not vote for her.

Hillary Clinton is not Bill Clinton who is vastly more charismatic and more charming and much less mean than her. It is our human nature to be turned off by a mean and nasty woman.

Yes, another Clinton would make it
BUSH-CLINTON-CLINTON-BUSH-BUSH-CLINTON. and THAT would pretty much define a full quarter-century of American, and World politics. If that scenario came to pass it would inevitably engender numerous think-pieces about how far we have strayed off the path the Founding Fathers had envisioned for us, and they would be right. Just look at a chronology of American Presidents: what has ALREADY happened is without precedent.

How much of the country would they give away to radical Islamists trying to appease them before someone finally stood up to them?

There are about 31 red states the Democrats would be willing to dicker with. Good-bye "Jesusland."

Show me a picture of Haley Barbour and let me know if he is electable for Presidency based on his looks. The man is a great conservative but based on appearances, he will lose 50% of the vote, and I am serious about this.

It is the media's nature to hype Hillary to the moon because she is a woman running for Prez....though i don't really disagree with you one bit...i just know how many puff pieces from Oprah, The View, Larry King and every other pop "news" outlet there will be....speaking ill of Hillary will be spun as "picking" on the girl...look at the kid glove treatment she got when she was Co-President.

WE also had THE biggest and unconstitutional, never happened before, retroactive tax increase, a whole lot of EO, that couldn't be legally undone, the selling of and/or outright give away of state secrets, and so much more, one's mind boggles.

That far too many here, of all place, refuse to admit that there are gigantic differences between Hillary and any of the top 3 GOP contenders, is astounding. Even worse, is that so many here keep saying how great LIEberman is.

No, I'm not ignorant. They want either we die or us being dhimmis. They won't necessarily kill us if we are submissive to them, i.e., just follow what they want from us.

Don't direct that to me....Haley would not be electable because of his thick southern drawl imo...you can take that to the bank....I like Haley a lot, great guy, but you are right, he's not electable these days....which pisses me off in a way >:(

Don't forget that Bill Clinton also treated the FIRST bombing of the WTC as a local, N.Y.C. police problem and virtually IGNORED the whole thing.

Zarf, glad you used those quote marks. Conservatism's essence is CONSERVING and PRESERVING.

Those who over-react to a less-than-ideal world by boycott or sabotage (threats to vote for Hillary etc.) do themselves no favors, as you imply. If you don't play your hand to the best of your ability, the hand is worthless--and remember, Liberals ALWAYS lie and bluff.

Meanwhile it is sheer IDIOCY to be stampeded, railroaded, herded by those seeking to shape mass opinion and steer it Leftward.

We have PLENTY of time to sit back and wait for some imperfect but satisfactory true Conservatives to rise to the top.

...popcorn, anyone?
