Gore announces 'global warming' concerts
By MICHAEL R. BLOOD, Associated Press Writer 7 minutes ago
Al Gore announced on Thursday a series of worldwide concerts to focus on the threat of climate change, with a powerhouse lineup from the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Snoop Dogg to Bon Jovi.
The 24-hour event on July 7 is part of a campaign, Save Our Selves The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis, that promoters hope will trigger a broad movement to address what the former vice president calls a global climate crisis.
"In order to solve the climate crisis, we have to reach billions of people," the environmental activist, filmmaker and 2000 Democratic presidential nominee said in a statement. "The climate crisis will only be stopped by an unprecedented and sustained global movement."
Gore is often mentioned as a possible presidential candidate in 2008 despite his repeated statements that he's not running. Recently, some former aides met in Boston to discuss a campaign to draft the former vice president.
The concerts on seven continents will bring newfound publicity to Gore, who already is enjoying celebrity status with his Oscar-nominated documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth." Gore said he was thrilled that the film, on the perils of global warming, was nominated for best documentary and for best song, the latter nod coming for Melissa Etheridge's "I Need to Wake Up."
The Academy Awards are Feb. 25.
More than 100 performers are scheduled to appear at the July concerts, including Etheridge, the Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Duran Duran, Korn, Pharrell, the Black Eyed Peas, Akon, Enrique Iglesias, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.
Promoters said the Live Earth concerts will take place in Shanghai, China; Johannesburg, South Africa; Sydney, Australia; London and cities to be announced in Japan, Brazil and the

he better wait till july or august, otherwise he'll be snowed out at his global warming concert thingy..
You may need to change your banner; it appears the Global Warming thing is not working out too well. Now its Climate Change.
"And this world-wide tour will proceed without the use of fossil fuels to move the performers, their roadies, or their equipment." /sarcasm
I know what I'll be making fun of all year.
Kudos for having the intestinal fortitude to post this. I saw it and could only shake my head!
"The 24-hour event on July 7 is part of a campaign, Save Our Selves The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis"
Exactly. AlGore is waiting for more hot air - hot summer air.
Can't you just hear algore saying, in his geeky, pencil-neck voice - "I was global warming before global warming was cool"
Funny that he would choose a location in China (soon to be the world's number 1 carbon emitter), Brazil, and South Africa, as all of those countries are so called 'developing' countries and thus exempt from the Kyoto Protocol. I actually think the blowback against global warming is starting. Some politicians, and more importantly, some reknowned scientists are starting to come forward to question the lack of 'science' behind Gore and his band of hot airheads.
I bet Algore has already consulted Jessie Jackson on how to do the "shake down".
We have Bonnoroo in my neck of the woods again this year and having covered two of these events already, I can tell you that they use a ton of energy at an event like this. The huge generators used to power the sound and the lights are just the tip of the iceburg. The Roo tries to promote itself as environmentially friendly, but those who come to the event are some of the worst slobs I've ever seen.
At least he scheduled THESE global warming events in July where they won't be cancelled because of snow.
Like one that moves the globe a few miles further away from the sun?
And I bet they will all share 1 Jet to get there
As I recall, last spring they were promoting the idea that Global Warming was going to cause England to become cooler about the temperature of Newfoundland. That one had me scratching my head.
I am beginning to think that if the temperature on a given day varies from what it was the year Gore was born, why then global warming is occurring.
When I was a child, one day my mother said "The snow is just not as deep as it was when I was a kid.". I scratched my head and realized that she was a lot shorter then, so it looked a lot deeper. Could that be Al's problem?
Save Our Selves....SOS....Get it? How clever.
