ABC’s Jennifer Rubin thinks she knows. According to her report, Mitt Romney announcing his candidacy yesterday at a museum named for Henry Ford has a lot to do with it:
Indeed, the incident may say something not only about Romney but about the GOP's problem with Jews. In his boatload of advisers, Romney apparently did not have anyone to say, "You know, a lot of Jews really hate Ford, and it might mess up your message.”
A few points here to counter Rubin’s hyperbole. At this moment, Romney has less a boatful of advisors than a handful. And, for what it’s worth, among that handful, my lantzmen are amply represented. Furthermore, most Jews don’t know about Henry Ford’s anti-Semitism and those that do couldn’t give a rat’s tuchas about it anyway.
What’s more, obviously Henry Ford’s fame doesn’t derive from his anti-Semitism. Romney’s announcement venue was as much of an issue (to all but the most hyper-sensitive Jews) as a photo-op in front of the Spirit of St. Louis would have been. Like Ford, Charles Lindbergh’s fame had nothing to do with his anti-Semitism. Now if Romney made an appearance at the next Leni Riefenstahl film festival, that would be noteworthy.
As an additional point of note, I’ve heard many Jews say they would never consider driving a German car as payback for the Holocaust. I have never heard a Jew say he wouldn’t drive a Ford, unless it related to the execrable quality of their vehicles. (In my younger days, I too used to say I would never drive a German car. When my financial situation changed, I amended that guideline to the only slightly less principled, “I’ll never drive a Volkswagen.”)
The ginned up controversy over Romney’s venue is hysterical, the kind of eye-roll inducing Jewish protest that makes me want to say to the complainers, “There are some very nasty people who want to exterminate 6 million of our co-religionists. Don’t we have bigger fish to fry?”
The complaints have come from the usual outraged suspects – I believe Alan Dershowitz is leading the charge this time. I love Dersh, but he’s always annoyed over some perceived slight. Dersh, Abe Foxman, Rabbi Heir – whenever these guys enter righteous outrage mode, it’s by nature a classic dog-bites-man story.
But let’s just say for the sake of ridiculous argument that the Republican Party is habitually not sensitive enough to the Jewish community’s concerns. The Democrats are better? Need I remind you that during the Democrats’ last presidential primary season, a so-called Reverend who had organized a virtual pogrom a few years earlier graced the stage at every debate. Since 2004, the Democratic extreme fringe has eagerly equated Zionism to systematic bigotry. The Grey Eminence of the Party, James Earl Carter himself, recently published a dreadful book that ludicrously asserted that Israel is an apartheid state. And, oh yeah, Wesley Clark just last week made a reference to how American foreign policy is dictated by “New York moneymen” with proboscises of unmentioned size.
In short, if you want to find the reason for the Republican failure to do better with the Jews, I guess you could choose to blame it on insufficient Republican sensitivity. But you’ll look pretty dumb if you do.
SO WHY DO JEWS VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS?
I think I’m in a unique position to answer that question since not only are some of my best friends Jewish, I too am Jewish. There are two main reasons: First, the social issues drive Jews into the Democrats’ sweaty embrace; second, it’s a tribal thing.
As far as the social issues are concerned, most Jews are liberal. Very liberal. They’re pro-choice, and they’re very concerned about the separation between church and state. These are serious matters for them. When Bush won re-election, I called to taunt one of my liberal friends, and she launched into a tirade that I think had something to do with back-alley abortions and legalizing date-rape. The American Jewish community in general is very uncomfortable with the virtually every position the Republicans hold on social issues.
And then there’s the church-and-state thing. Jews are concerned about being a powerless minority. The Holocaust haunts them; for a lot of Jews, it still lingers as a cautionary tale of how quickly and totally things can go south even in a society into which they’ve fully assimilated. That’s why nativity scenes and prayers at football games tend to elicit such a visceral reaction from some Jews. These things are reminders of the Jews’ minority status, and thus what they perceive as their vulnerability. (I’m not saying any of this is rational – I don’t think it is. I’m just being descriptive here.)
The other reason so many Jews vote reflexively and exclusively Democrat is because it’s a tribal thing. Their grandparents voted only for Democrats. So too their parents. Many of today’s Jews are going to do the same thing.
I’ve had conversations with Jews whose primary concern is Israel’s well-being. I point out to them that Israel has never had a better friend than George W. Bush. Objectively, that fact is unassailable. And yet Jews who are tribal Democrats refuse to even engage the issue. The notion that George Bush, an Evangelical Christian of all things, is a friend to Israel is so far outside their conceptual framework they can’t process it. They lack the bandwidth.
So what can Republicans do about this? Pretty much nothing. These things take decades to change. The attitude of the far left to Israel will drive some Jews to consider voting Republican, but nowhere near a majority. The South took a century after the Civil War to even consider supporting Republicans.
Like I said, these things take time.
I wince, inwardly, every time I see one of these "When, Oh When Will Those Silly Jews Ever LEARN?" stories posted here, as they inevitably serve as the dog whistle for every no-neck know-nothing within a five hundred megabyte radius to come a-runnin'. We then are "treated" (not actually the word I had in mind, but Jim doesn't approve of cursing on the boards) to pig-ignorant postings to the effect of "Them thar Jooos, they'd vote fer Hitler, if'n he were a Democrat, hyuck-hyuck-hyuck," and similarly constituted blatherings.
Kiddies: just a wee little bit of historical perspective here, all right? Yeah, absolutely, GWB may well qualify as the single staunchest friend Israel has ever known, White House-wise... but: for way, way too may decades prior to this one, the Republican Party enjoyed an all-too-well deserved reputation as the party of naked and unapologetic anti-semitism; and that's NOT the sort of rep it's going to suddenly "lose," overnight, solely on the strength of GWB's good works alone.
Nixon's numerous weird "issues" with us are a matter of public record. Pat Buchanan -- long a powerful mover and shaker within the party -- was (and still is) even more rabid and foaming. Jews make a point of remembering those who openly and expressly wish them ill, no less than any other group; and some (many, most likely) may NEVER feel entirely comfortable with the party, as a result of such ugliness and hatred in the past.
What you're witnessing, here, is a generational transformation: younger Jews trending more and more conservative, politically, over the last twenty years (and continuing to do so), replacing in prominence (and voting numbers) older Jews, as the latter pass from the scene.
Newsflash: generational changes, by definition, take at least one generation to take effect. Staring impatiently at your wristwatch and muttering "... what's taking then so damned long, anyway?" won't speed up the process one bit; and the slack-jawed nitwiticisms on unfortunate display here (comparing Jews to sheep, dogs, etc.) only serve to retard the process further still. Large, steaming mugs of STFU need to be passed around to, and promptly chugged down by, more than one poster herabouts whose fingers move faster than his/her brain.

Not at all surprising to me. American liberal Jews are suicidal in the extreme. While they do not profess a hatred of Israel their actions tend to be more anti-Israel and anti-Jewish than any "hate" group I can think of. They support Nazi-style gun bans, a Nazi-style police state, Nazi-style propaganda (Jews own or control over 70% of mass media outlets...just a statistical fact folks, not me being a Nazi okay?), and Nazi-style socialism (government 'partnering' with private industry for the 'common good').

If Bush Wins in November, then he should abide by the wishes of the Jewish voters and minimize support for Israel and make sure the hard working American tax dollars are completely cutoff from Israel. There is an extreme hatred/fear of Christians and Christianity among most American Jews that never really becomes obvious until something or someone Christian threatens to bubble up to the mainstream….That much is fact. I'm sure the reasons for it are more complex than I can guess at. It is ironic that if Christianity met the doom that most Jews wish for it that their own doom would swiftly follow.

This is disgusting. Bush (and 140,000 American soldiers, 900+dead), saved the Israeli Army from a "death march" across Jordan and Iraq to Baghdad in an effort to stop Husseins money funding suicide bombers. The only other alternative was to "Nuke" Baghdad, but Damascus, Cairo, Riyadh and Tehran, would have to follow.

More likely you misunderstand the term ghetto, I refer you to the dictionary of your choice. Ghettos invole a level of compulsion, physical force, or simply economic or social pressures.
However, if ghettos are voluntary, how am I to understand the many derisive comments about most Jews having no religious values, just a bunch of secular liberals. They congregate only with Jewish secular liberals?
Intermarriage, around 50% in the Jewish community, they mail order Christian brides, who then settle in the Jewish ghettos.
This may come as a shock, but Jews associate with all kinds of people.
And who knows, if you're going to get accused anyway, it might be fun to be part of a cabal.

Listen Missy, I am no "Jew hater". I have dated Jewish women and have many Jewish friends and coworkers. I have defended Jews and any other minorities. I tutor minority kids of all types for hours on the weekends. These are kids who don't get parental support, and I do it for free. Why? Because I want to make my small difference in the world. And you know what? I'm damned good at it.
I have tried to discuss abortion logically with my Jewish friends, but it never worked. I even discussed abortion on a bus with a woman I met studying to be a Rabbi who was vehemently pro-abortion. I only spoke about my observations about the Jews I have met (and dated some), -BUT- you interpreted, concluded, and projected wrongly about me and then you spoke wrongly about me.
I am hoping you have something in you to apologize as hard as you insulted me. But I have doubt with your attitude. Your jump to your despicable conclusion was, and will always be, horrible.

Since the article was speaking of Jews and specifically liberal Jews who vote for the increasingly leftist Democrat party, it seems to me that a reasonable person could see why another reasonable person might mention Jews and far left Jews specifically. This has nothing to do with bashing Jews, rather it is identifying the leftist fanaticism of Jews who are on the left, whose life work is for the far left. If you have a specific question or a comment about something specific in the article, I will do my best to give a reasonable answer.
