Woodward adds twist to CIA leak case ~ Armitage tape at CNN reveals truth of Plame exposure

Listening to the full Woodward tape of Under Secretary of State Richard Armitage leaking the news about Plame must be giving Fitzgerald nightmares. CNN has posted the full tape played at the trial and it is astounding. The part that got me was when Armitage said “His wife named him”, and Woodward asks, “Why doesn’t this get out?”. Then Armitage says, on June 13th 2003, basically what Andrea Mitchell would say months later when she was talking off the cuff on CNBC. Armitage laughingly says “Everyone knows”. In the words of Mitchell.

MURRAY And the second question is: Do we have any idea how widely known it was in Washington that Joe Wilson’s wife worked for the CIA?

MITCHELL: It was widely known among those of us who cover the intelligence community and who were actively engaged in trying to track down who among the foreign service community was the envoy to Niger. So a number of us began to pick up on that. But frankly I wasn’t aware of her actual role at the CIA and the fact that she had a covert role involving weapons of mass destruction, not until Bob Novak wrote it.

But Armitage goes further and explains HOW everyone knew. Woodward repeats back incredulously “Everyone knew”? and Armitage provides the hard evidence of who was talking about Plame” .. because Joe Wilson has been calling everybody! He’s pissed off ’cause he’s looked at as some low level guy…”. I predicted long ago, and again just prior to the trial, it would come out that Joe and Valerie were both sources for Kristof and others. Armitage is not saying ‘everyone knows’ who Joe Wilson is (though they did).

all these reporters who called Rove to ask him about this - they already knew the answer to what they were probing him for.

This is actually a bread-and-butter technique for reporters. There is a reason news items are called stories. That's exactly what they are...tales. They are the reporter's take on information gathered in bits and pieces through seemingly innocent conversations in which the reporter holds back or misrepresents whatever information they already have in order to try to get someone to spill additional info.

Reporters will also eavesdrop, snoop, sneak, and steal in order to get bits of information.

They then go back to their desks and spin their interpretation of all the bits they collected into a tale that may or may not have any close resemblance to the actual facts of the matter.

Good point, it IS bigger than Rathergate because it involves so many "journalists" and media organizations...... the blogosphere and talk radio will have to start demanding that ever DBM reporter and editor come clean on "what did you know and when did you know it -- and from WHOM?" How many received info directly from Joe and/or Valerie? Which ones allowed the "White House revenge" piece of agitprop go forward even though had personal reasons to know that Joe Wilson is a psychopathic liar?

To me...this potentially is bigger than Rathergate....

It is bigger, Ernest, but all the reporters involved will not face any consequences. Neither will that snake Fitzgerald. And the Libby case is obscure to most average folks. Only a comparatively few political junkies like us know the truth.

It has always been my contention that this trip was a boondoggle for personal gain, i.e., Wilson was engaged in personal business and used the USG [via his wife] to fund his second trip there at USG expense. It was only when Joe Wilson, the opportunist, saw a way to use the trip to garner a position with the Kerry campaign and perhaps the Kerry administration that he put a political spin on it. This was clearly a case of nepotism. There was absolutely no need to send him there. The Embassy and the COS could just have easily obtained the needed information.

I agree, I think it started out with wifey Val using her govt. position to help hubby promote his "consulting" business in West Africa at taxpayer expense.

He said and did virtually nothing about it until May - July 2003 when he had the bright idea to turn his insignificant trip into a new kind of boondoggle, promoting the 'Rat party and the Kerry campaign by attacking the Bush WH.

p.s. I'm very curious to see whether George Tenet will have anything useful to say in his memoir, which should be available any day now:

http://www.amazon.com/At-Center-Storm-George-Tenet/dp/0061147788/sr=1-1/qid=1171344011/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-8753173-2039915?ie=UTF8&s=books

There's reason to fear he may follow the impulse of greed and tell the MSM what it wants to hear so they will help him sell lots of books, but Tenet must know plenty that would blow up Joe and Valerie's fraud, and Tenet can't be too pleased that the reputation of the CIA has been dragged through the mud due to those two clowns. Also, surely Tenet will be willing to defend and explain some of the WMD intel??

Also...David Corn wrote a book with someone else...which is probably packed with lies.

I wish this would take out the MSNBC/NBC gaggle of reporters like Rathergate took out Danny-boy!!

Oh..and they can take Sissy Chrissy Matthews with them.

I REALLY want to see Chris Matthews cry on national TV, when he finds out this has all been for NOTHING.

He has practically turned his whole show over to this case this last year...LOL

I would think this just might put an end to Joe and Valerie's civil suit against Cheney, Rove and Libby, don't you think??

Yes, the Corn/Isikoff book is what got Fedora launched on what became the "Plamegate: 25 Lingering Questions" that Clarice (and many of us) have praised so highly. Fedora shows convincingly that Corn & Isikoff are biased and incompetent when they are not merely dishonest (OK, those are my words!). Corn is a far-left agitprop scum, while Isikoff pretends to be a more legitimate "investigative" reporter. The fact that Isikoff couldn't even figure out that by working with Corn his (Isikoff) integrity and objectivity would be deeply compromised by one of the main perps of the real Plamegate crime shows that Isikoff is either too dim or too biased to be respected.

I don't think he is dim...but, I do think that he has a bad case of BDS..which has overtaken quite a few of the MSM...and I think he thought he would make more of a name by helping to bring down Cheney...and thus, the Bush Admin.

All one has had to do is watch Hardball since the day Novak's column came out..and you could see that they are eaten up in hatred for Pres. Bush.

In fact...there was a time that I wondered if maybe Soros or someone didn't put Plame and Wilson up to doing this..and the purposely getting the "outing of a CIA agent" out as way to bring down Bush.

I am curious about the why and how of the CIA request to Justice to investigate the leak and why Tenet issued his July 11,2003 Press Release admitting that the 16 words in the STOU address were a mistake and should never have been included in the text written for the President. The admission of a "mistake" just fed the flames of this non-incident.

Tenet could have done a lot more to smack down the inanities and misdirection introduced by Joe Wilson and the DBM, but even in what he released it should have been clear to any non-deranged readers (are there any in the DBM?) that the "Niger uranium" issue was quite secondary to pre-war intel assessments, and that Joe Wilson was leading the press and the entire country/world on a ludicrous diversion from the real issues.

"In October, the Intelligence Community (IC) produced a classified, 90 page National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on Iraq’s WMD programs. There is a lengthy section in which most agencies of the Intelligence Community judged that Iraq was reconstituting its nuclear weapons program. Let me emphasize, the NIE’s Key Judgments cited six reasons for this assessment; the African uranium issue was not one of them.
