New York City will be protected by a ring of devices to detect nuclear or dirty bombs before the end of the year, the Department of Homeland Security said Friday.
A dirty bomb is one that spreads radiation without employing a nuclear explosion.
The Department of Homeland Security hopes the circle of sensors will give warning if a bomb is transported into the city by land.

Yes! I have been calling for this to be done for more than a year. In addition, they need to start setting up emergency response centers for a worst case scenario should something get through and be detonated. The threat is real and I am convinced there are evil minds fixed on this third attempt.

The city needs to be better prepared IMO.

Erm... heavy lead shielding on over the package will pretty much foil these detectors. Unless these are not radiation detectors, I find this a complete waste of taxpayer money.

Will this protect the rest of us from whatever comes out of New York? :-)

Ah, but will they be able to detect small light-brite devices? Inquiring Bostonians want to know.....

Wonder if HS had anything to scan these containers as they are being offloaded or if HS is just leaving that up to the shipping port?

The first nuc detectors ringed metro areas beginning in the 60s. A photo dectors which needed a nuclear flash to set it off. Of course, by the time that NORAD noted the nudet it was too late to do anything but pray for the recently departed!
Listening for enemy transmissions is more timely.

Sounds like science fiction to me? Does anyone else believe that the terrorists have a good thing going in the liberal media, Muslims are being racially profiled, only a few radical Muslims are the problem, while all other Muslims are content to have their children converted to Christianity or taken to strip shows in SanFrancisco? If the terrorists detonate a bomb in NY City the liberal media will have to abandon their cause and I doubt that the terrorists are that stupid. They already have the liberal media doing everything possible to get out out of Iraq. Once we are out then start looking for an attack.

Even if such an attack is inevitable, which I think it is, you have to do something.
I wouldn't just ring it, I'd put them at every intersection. That, and start preparing emergency response centers (underground or appropriately shielded) now. Have them in place and stocked in 2 years.

New York City will be protected by a ring of devices to detect nuclear or dirty bombs before the end of the year It will take longer than that to negotiate the union contracts and get the mob concrete (doesn't matter if it's needed for the project, or not) delivered and poured.

I find this a complete waste of taxpayer money Probably so. It will also protect against political cheapshots by professional cheapshot artists, like most all democrats.

This'll work - if the terrorists do what everyone expects them to. What happens if a ship off-loads a nuke or dirty bomb 15-20 miles offshore, and a cigarette boats takes off with it, headed for NY Harbor?
Oh, and what about all of our other cities? I'll agree that NY is tops on the hitlist for the ROP, but an opening in LA, Seattle, Houston, Miami, etc. will do immense damage.
What we should do is give radiation detectors to the Iranians, and let them know that if any of our citizens die from an atomic blast or radiation poisoning, then they will be able to point them in any direction in Iran and they will get a hit.

I figure you see the bright light, look for the cloud and then KYAGB .....IMHO .... which isn't much .... or just look for people falling over dead .... you think the media won't tag all the detectors, point them out on a map????

That would be much easier to spot by the Coast Guard or aerial surveillance.
I think unmarked vans/trucks are the greater threat.

So that means they'll be able to tell before one of these devices explodes and they can jam their heads further up their rear ends?

What is your proposal for action? We have to do something re: homeland defense on this. Let's not be Democrats here.
