Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei has today warned that if under attack, Iran will hit back at US interests worldwide.
While it is not unusual for Iran to threaten such a wide-reaching response to US action, the threat was issued as details were broadcast on state television that missiles had been test-launched today.
Speaking at a meeting of Iranian air force commanders, Iran's supreme spiritual leader said: "The enemy knows well that any invasion would be followed by a comprehensive reaction to the invaders and their interests all over the world.
"We believe that no one will make such an unwise and wrong move (to attack Iran) that would endanger their country and interests."
He added: "Some say that the US president is not the type who acts based on calculations or thinks about the consequences of his action.
"But even these people can be brought to their senses."
Iran is at loggerheads with the United States over its disputed nuclear programme which has prompted Washington to order a second aircraft carrier to the Gulf to bolster US influence.
A televised broadcast today revealed that Iran's Revolutionary Guards were test-firing missiles that could apparently sink "big warships" in the Gulf, the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean.
The testing means that it is now the second day that Iran has been conducting war-games designed to be a public display of military might.
Revolutionary Guards naval commander Ali Fadavi said: "These missiles, with a maximum range of 350 km (220 miles), can hit different kinds of big warships in all of the Persian Gulf, all of the Sea of Oman and the north of the Indian Ocean."
However, Tehran insists its nuclear programme is purely civilian and says it is not backing militants in Iraq.
Both President George W Bush and Tony Blair have said that neither country intends to invade Iran.
Hopefully, we still have the sense it takes to realize a real war is a real war. The World will be a much better place if Iran is eliminated as a threat. If it can be done peacefully, fine. If it comes to war, be decisive.

Actually I doubt we'll invade Iran. But I see a lot of infrastructure damage in their future.
I'm not so sure we will. Fer cryin' out loud, there are freepers on here calling for the President to be impeached: I'm starting to think that people are too interested in their single-issue complaints to ever pull together.

Amen. Sometimes I wonder how long until they say we need to stop the war on terror until we fix immigration/abortion/whatever else... or have they already said such things?
What are they going to do take some more hostages? Carter's not in office this year.

Sounds fair. We attack them. They attack us to the best of their ability. We put an end to civilization in their country, take over their oil fields, pump and refine the oil ourselves and kill any surviving Iranians who annoy us.
Or maybe we just put an end to their oil production, period.

Yes it is possible for an entire country to go nuts.
The late Saddam Hussein also convinced himself, and his country, that they would win the "mother of all battles".
There must be an arab word for "monumental bluffing".
I remain convinced that we never should have occupied Afghanistan or Iraq, either. That was the major strategic error.
Make rubble as many times as necessary for them to get the message.
And let them (if they can) spend their wealth and energy focused on emerging again from the stone age.

I have noted this many times on FR whenever anyone copy/pastes this list.
Sirhan Sirhan, RFK's assassin, was not an Islamic terrorist. He was not a Muslim when he assassinated RFK. His family were Jordanian Christians, and he was raised as such. He explored many different religions in his life, including Baptist and Seventh Day Adventism, among other things.
The list is powerful but it loses most of it's power when it's obvious that the first item on the list is wrong.
To be fair, he harbored a great hatred for Israel, which helped motivate him to assassinate RFK. Though many Muslim terrorists share his hatred for Israel, that fact doesn't make someone an Islamic terrorist.
