The Speaker's use of military aircraft didn't start till after 9-11 when Hastert was Speaker. His flight home is only 700 miles v. Pelosi's 2700 mile trip. Hastert didn't have all those granddarlings to schlep across the country ;)
I imagine in the past she used some democrat's aircraft to transdport her little self to and from dc to sf. Or...she could use hillarie's broom.
Hastert had the use of a military jet - but it only seats 12 people. The one Pelosi wanted seats 42 .. a little grandiose for the Speaker.
As for security .. she would be allowed to land at any military base to refuel .. which to me would still provide her with extra security.

Speaker doesn't fly commercial for same reason the VP doesn't fly commercial. She can use the same plane that Hastert used, but she doesn't want to have to stop to refuel "for security reasons". That is a crock because the security for her refueling stop would probably be even tighter than her facial stretch. The real crux of the issue is she wants a bigger nicer fancier plane so she can have a bigger entourage and fly in luxury.
