What many conservatives regard as the nightmare scenario -- President Hillary Rodham Clinton -- is increasingly seen by veteran Republican politicians and strategists as a virtual inevitability.
In GOP circles, the Democratic front-runner is seen as so strong, and the political climate for Republicans so hostile, that many influential voices -- including current and former lawmakers, and veterans of President Bush's campaigns -- have grown despairing. These partisans describe a political equivalent of the stages of grief, starting with denial, then resentment and ending with acceptance.
For now, these Republicans say the party needs good luck, including a change of fortune in Iraq, and a revival of organization and leadership in the conservative movement to avert another Clinton presidency.
"If the conservative movement and Republicans don't understand how massive the Clinton coalition is, she will be the next president," former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said in an interview last week, after giving a private talk to GOP lawmakers. Clinton will win, he added, "if we don't use everything available to us and motivate our base, the people that believe in us."
In his closed-door comments to conservative House members, DeLay warned of the wealth and political potency of the Clinton fundraising network.
"We do have to get our act together, and I'd agree with Tom DeLay on that," said Rep. Steve King of Iowa. "At this point, short an inspirational Republican nominee, then I would agree that it's going to be very difficult to beat Hillary if she wins the nomination."
Those comments echoed those by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich last month on Fox News:

OK - how's about US doing a little of what it takes to get our man in? How about not bending over every time the clow car media chimes in? How about us stopping whining and maundering in public places about our poor chances? How about that?
I agree. My mom and I were talking about who was running so far. My reply: are these really my only choices? What would Reagan do? I really wish his mind hadn't gone. He would have been such a wonderful advisor for the GOP in the 90's... Heaven knows we could have used it!
If the Republicans lose to this creature they have no one, NO ONE, but themselves to blame.
And, as feckless, stupid, and craven as they (THE GOP) have been over the last six years, I wouldn't be surprised to see it.
She'll have to follow the bent one's advice and triangulate, posing as a centrist on important issues. (He is working behind the scenes, after all.) I'm betting she'll jump to the right of them on illegal immigration (it won't take much; some bogus fence-building and such, with plenty of hot air) and kick their asses.
1. Cut Spending.
2. Cut Taxes.
3. Reduce Size and Scope of Government.
In that order.
There is simply no reason that the amount of money spent by the government has to go up, year after year. We have all accepted this as the normal way of things. It need not be so.
In fact, it is entirely achievable for government spending to go down year after year, for quite a long time. Real tax relief will come from real government contraction. Without spending less, all the promises of tax relief are just smoke-and-mirrors.
It's hard to take any site that presents CBS news headlines as credible.
I can't wait to hear what whopper she tells next!
When she says she wants to confiscate profits, I don't think she's lying. She does.
Not if he wins NY, NJ, PA and Florida. Otherwise we could have another 2000 scenario in a battleground state. I'd rather have strong, decisive win.
"New people will be running for us. Never give up."
Sorry, it's a no win for the base. If we motivate, and elect Democrat-lite, the message to the Republicans is that we want Democrat-lite. And we will be fed a steady diet of Democrat-lite.
So, we just have to hope that the Democrats don't completely destroy the country while the Republicans regroup and figure out that most Americans are conservative and want conservative candidates.

I don't think she's going to make it.
She has huge negatives.
The irony is this:
The Dems were supposed to lose in 06, according to many of the conservative talkshow hosts, and that would be the end of the Democrat party.
Now, the demise of the Republican party seems imminent.
I particularly like this analogy.
As for this one
She's thinking 'Get your hands off me you FJB!' and
Why doesn't that crucifix burn her skin?????
Exactly!
She's beatable from the simple question of WHAT has she done as a Senator?
I'd like to see ONE piece of legislation she's authored. Just one.
I will go further and say that it will be no great loss. If the Republicans continue along the path of almost-but-not-quite-as-bad, there will be nothing there worth saving. They are taking up a spot that could be occupied by a real political party.
They're all too interested in protecting their own necks. They won't figure out that doesn't work until the last one is kicked out of Washington.
Well, hell. Why don't we just call off the election and start calling her Madame President now? How quickly can we have an inauguration?
Why do I think SHE has more FBI files in her closet than any of us really know...including Rudy's......
Well, if Republicans would actually stand up to the lies and smears, they'd stand more than a chance. They'd ensure that no Democrat gets elected to the WH in our lifetimes.
But no. They're all playing this new game called "new tone in Washington" and we're taking it on the chin.
