Space shuttle astronaut arrested at OIA on attempted kidnapping, battery charges
Orlando Sentinel ^ | February 5, 2007 | Henry Pierson Curtis

A NASA astronaut is charged with attacking her rival for another astronaut's attention early Monday at Orlando International Airport, the Orlando Sentinel has learned.

Lisa Marie Nowak drove from Texas to meet the 1 a.m. flight of a younger woman who had also been seeing the male astronaut Nowak pined for, according to Orlando police.

Nowak -- who was a mission specialist on a Discovery launch last summer -- was wearing a trench coat and wig and had a knife, BB pistol, rubber tubing and plastic bags, reports show. Once U.S. Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman arrived, Nowak followed her to the airport's Blue Lot for long-term parking, tried to get into Shipman's car and doused her with pepper spray, according to reports.

Any ideas when Oefelein and Shipman first met?

Did Nowak and Shipman communicate with Oefelein while he was up on the shuttle?

What was Shipman's business in Houston?

Like I said, that was a crime of opportunity.

It was consistent with nothing, led to nothing, nor could it have. Like Novak said herself to the police, "That was stupid."

If the opportunity window had been opened wider, then what? "Sorry Capt. Shipman for cutting your throat?"

It looks to me it was a case of "I'll see how far I get with this" and abort at the first sign of trouble. She almost did get away.

IMO the pepper spray was part of the abort procedure, to make it harder for Shipman to recognize her assailant, in addition to the use of the wig and hooded trenchcoat.

These are all good questions and would help us come to a better understanding of what happened.

Why bother with a BB gun if she really wanted her dead?

And how about this: I'll bet Nowak's relationship with Johnny Rockets was known by others, including Nowak's husband, and her motive would have been known to others. If Shipman disappeared, what would have been Novak's alibi? Huh?

If all she wanted to do was kill her, she could have come through the window with the mallet, not the mace.

That makes no sense that you're saying she maced so as to aid her escape. She didn't have a car so she'd have to take a shuttle bus back. Whats more, if she didn't mace, there is NO CRIME and no arrest, just a creepy encounter in a parking lot.

More questions - why did she have to purchase all the items on the way? Why didn't she use any pre-existing weapons?

The arresting officer says the packaging for the weapons were all in the car.

USAF CAPT COLLEEN SHIPMAN.

Not bad, not bad at all I say - I'd like to see her smile.

An alternate explanation was that she was resigned to being caught, but did everything in her power to create the impression that should would kill for the affections of Oefelein, without actually doing so.

Corner...control...kill

It was a bb gun that resembled a 9mm pistol. In her list was the note "ammo 9".

Nowak: The Relationship Question

While Lisa Nowak told police her association with fellow astronaut William Oefelein was "more than a working relationship but less than a romantic relationship," the real meaning behind that description remained a mystery today.

Charlene Davis, mother of Oefelein's ex-wife, Michaella, told the Los Angeles Times that Nowak played a role in the couple's 2005 divorce. "I have not met Lisa," Davis said. "I only know she broke my daughter's heart."

The Oefeleins, parents of a 16-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, ended their 17-year marriage as a result of irreconcilable differences.

Meanwhile, the New York Times in today's editions reported that in-house romances at NASA are not unprecedented.

George Abbey, Johnson Space Center director when Nowak entered the program, told the Times, "You've got some hard-charging people, and you need to manage them."

Such problems do not develop "overnight," he said, adding, "you have to be sensitive to what your people are doing."

Occasionally, he said, he had "stepped in and people weren't happy about it."

But, he advised them, "What you're doing is not a personal thing for you _ it's affecting a lot of people around you and affecting your performance."

Awaiting Nowak's arrival home

Two women arrived at Nowak's Clear Lake-area home around 8:30 a.m. this morning and parked across the street in a neighbor's driveway.

They could be seen using a step ladder and measuring tape to attach paper blinds to the front windows of the home.

Roughly a dozen journalists, including cameramen and photographers, were waiting in Nowak's cul-de-sac for her anticipated arrival.

Wow, so it sounds like something was going on between Nowak and Bill O back in 2005? Hmm...Well, that clears up a few things. They were not just friends, and she didn't just have a crush on him. They had some kind of affair. I wonder how long it lasted? Seems like it must have ended fairly recently, otherwise she would have acted sooner.

Mission Timeline
----------------
Nowak and Oefelein take an arctic survival course together in 2004.

Oefelein divorces in 2005. (It appears likely that Nowak was an issue in the breakup - statement of Oefelein's ex-wife's mother.)

Nowak took her first shuttle flight mid-2006.

Oefelein took his first shuttle flight Dec-2006.

Nowak separates from her husband Jan-2007.

Nowak conducts a 900-mile EVA to communicate with Shipman, who is orbiting Oefelein.

The parameter being improperly modeled was the thruster impulse bit.

Source?

From the source we have BOTH referenced, page 6, we find the following.

The MCO MIB has determined that the root cause for the loss of the MCO spacecraft was the failure to use metric units in the coding of a ground software file, “Small Forces,” used in trajectory models. Specifically, thruster performance data in English units instead of metric units was used in the software application code titled SM_FORCES (small forces). A file called Angular Momentum Desaturation (AMD) contained the output data from the SM_FORCES software. The data in the AMD file was required to be in metric units per existing software interface documentation, and the trajectory modelers assumed the data was provided in metric units per the requirements.

So, where am I wrong? I see nothing regarding an impulse bit. Yet, you proceed to argue a point that is categorically defined by your own sources.

I have made absolutely no mistakes in either my statements, nor my declaration of incompetence. If a CEO blew a factory up with loss of life (such as 2 Shuttle crews) costing multi-Billions, his career would be over. If a CEO blew up a multi-year effort costing multi-Billions, he'd be called incompetent. Why is NASA immune from calls as to their competence? As we go along, we'll continue to see unnecessary loss of life - not due to unforeseen problems, but because of people taking short-cuts (the Hubble telescope is a great example)

So small forces is not a "solve for" in the trajectory determination runs?

Once again: It was a pounds-seconds ('Merican units) Newton-seconds (Metric units) error in the software.

Source? Sorry, you are both WRONG. Source

This is from page 6 of the Executive Report

The MCO MIB has determined that the root cause for the loss of the MCO spacecraft was the failure to use metric units in the coding of a ground software file, “Small Forces,” used in trajectory models. Specifically, thruster performance data in English units instead of metric units was used in the software application code titled SM_FORCES (small forces). A file called Angular Momentum Desaturation (AMD) contained the output data from the SM_FORCES software. The data in the AMD file was required to be in metric units per existing software interface documentation, and the trajectory modelers assumed the data was provided in metric units per the requirements.

So, where did you get your information ? Continuing on, we find the following sentence.

Root Cause: Failure to use metric units in the coding of a ground software file, “Small Forces,” used in trajectory models
Contributing Causes: 1. Undetected mismodeling of spacecraft velocity changes

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't velocity measured in Km/hr or Miles/hr?

Maybe by zeroing out the small forces, they would have seen the effect of bad units in the model's prediction versus observed trajectory.

"Never trust your inputs".
