The Last Word: George Clooney The frustrated American

Feb. 12, 2007 issue - George Clooney has played everything from a doctor to a CIA operative. But these days, the 45-year-old Oscar-winning actor (and Oscar-nominated director) is reveling in his role as an activist. Since first visiting Darfur in 2006, Clooney has been an outspoken critic of the genocide currently taking place in western Sudan. Last September he addressed the United Nations Security Council, urging it to act in Darfur. In December he traveled to China and Egypt to meet with state officials to put pressure on the government of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir. And January saw the U.S. television debut of "A Journey to Darfur," a documentary coproduced by Clooney and his father, Nick, a veteran television journalist. NEWSWEEK's Ginanne Brownell spoke to Clooney, who, lest anyone forget, is still a Hollywood actor. (He was recently voted People magazine's "sexiest man alive" for the second time and appears as a journalist in the new film "The Good German.") Excerpts:

[SNIP]

The International Criminal Court is due to present its findings from an investigation into war-crimes allegations in Darfur soon. What effect will this have? It is rather astonishing that the United States does not play ball with the ICC, considering our country was the beacon of the idea of an international criminal court. I really like what the ICC is doing. [But] I do not know how effective it is. I suppose if everybody subscribed to it, it would be tremendously effective. But I do not think that is going to happen in the near future.

If I were a foreigner, I would hate America just because of meddling "celebrities" like this. I'm sure foreigners see George Clooney as just your typical self-centered, meddlesome American.

I was hoping it really would be Clooney's last word. Too much to hope for.

Doesn't like America for going into a sovereign country to save the citizens from murder and death (Iraq).

Currently campaigning for America to go into a sovereign country to save the citizens from murder and death (Sudan). That's the sort of dumb that can form a black hole.

I wonder why George didn't show up at the hate-America leftwing, lovefest? Maybe he thought it would hurt his "career."

Clooney is a male bimbo. His behavior is the fruit of an ego unbound.

Ann Coulter summed it up quite clearly when she said that the only time liberals favor going to war is when it's NOT in the national interest of the United States.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not minimizing the evil of the Darfur genocide. However, the liberals are extremely selective in their outrage. Much like in WWII, when most liberals were against the US supporting the Allies until Hitler turned on Stalin and attacked the Soviet Union, breaking his non-aggression pact.

It's always good to start the day with a laugh. I hope you don't mind if I use that line without paying you royalties.

It's nowhere near as astonishing as the fact that there are people in the United States who care what a pretty boy - whose garner of fame is the ability to play make-believe marginally well - has to say about anything other than what dishwashing detergent to buy.

THAT'S "astonishing".

Many foreigner love people like Clooney because they can use them for their campaign against America. Look what a fool they made of Sean Penn during and after his Iraq trip.

George is looking a little light in his loafers there! Who is he dating?
I notice that he brings his Mom as his escort to the redcarpet event...not that there is anything wrong with that!

No worries about royalties - I donated that line to the conservative community years ago, since we have to deal with libs so often.

Clooney in Darfur plea to UN 11.39, Thu Sep 14 2006 Hollywood actor George Clooney has addressed the United Nations about the growing crisis in Sudan. He urged UN countries to act more forcefully in the trouble-stricken region of Darfur. At a meeting hosted by UN Ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, both Clooney and human rights activist Elie Wiesel entreated the UN to send in peacekeeping forces, with or without the Sudanese government's permission. Both called the humanitarian crisis in the region "genocide" and warned that Darfur could become

Oh sure Clooney wants the UN to play Bully, but not the US.
