If hope can come from tragedy, Dawn Amora found it in Terri Schiavo, then Martin Lee Anderson. It was the discomforting optimism that feels a bit illicit because of its unintentional reliance on another's pain. But as a mother who adopted seven children, five with special needs, Dawn welcomes hope from any source - a smile from her autistic children, mild backtalk (a "fighting spirit") from her brain-damaged daughter "Mo-Mo," or, in the response to Terri Schiavo and Martin Anderson, a sign of concern from someone who can make a difference. She felt sadness for Mary Schindler, whose adult daughter Terri Schiavo lay in a vegetative state for 15 years, reliant on a feeding tube, and for Gina Jones, whose 14-year-old son, Martin, was beaten to death by guards at a state-monitored juvenile boot camp. But after then-Gov. Bush went to Congress in 2005 as part of a two-year effort to try to stop Terri Schiavo's husband from removing her feeding tube and Gov. Crist last month changed the rules of bureaucracy to offer Ms. Jones $5''million because of the unquestionable abuse by the Bay County boot camp guards, Dawn Amora could not help but hope: If the governor can help them, maybe, just maybe, he'll help Marissa.

The religious conservatives do not value actual human life; they are consistent followers of the Christian ideal that human life is properly lived in sacrifice to a supernatural being, and that suffering is proof of virtue. The worship of suffering is fundamental to Christianity, a religion whose central figure is glorified for dying a horrific death for the sins of mankind. Several years ago, a prominent religious conservative said of the Schiavo case, "Terry Schiavo . . . is suffering in obedience to God's will." He added: "Isn't suffering in pursuit of God's will the exact center of religious life?"
This is the culture of death--of living death.
Human life is sacred--not because of supernatural declaration, but because of the unique nature and glorious potential of the individual, rational human life: to think, to create, to love, to experience pleasure, to achieve happiness here on earth. A genuine culture of life would leave individuals free to pursue their own happiness--free from coercive injunctions to sacrifice themselves to religious dogma. Such a culture is what we must seek to create, as we do everything possible to fight religious conservatives' culture of living death.

>> ...Moesha... had been beaten nearly to death under the negligent watch of the Florida Department of Children and Families.
Haleigh Poutre was beaten nearly to death under the equally negligent watch of the child protection agency in Massachusetts.
Are we beginning to get a picture?
Marissa? Charlie Crist loves spouting the word justice but has no idea its meaning. Poor Marissa. Crist is a secular humanist.
Jeb stopped helping Terri. Crist never did. It’s the Pinellas GOP gang which runs not only Fla but also the usa imo.
