The DU round works by kinetic energy. A counter measure won't stop it. In WWII we learned to defeat shape charges by causing the round to initiate far enough away from the armor that it's energy was spent prior to entering the armor. We still use this technique on some vehicles. It's a matter of initiating the standoff far enough away from the item to be penetrated.

Lol, the garage door opener technique eh? Those are easily detected, what are the major worries are the victim operated (i.e.Pressure Plate, Circuit Completion). They are very crude, very primitive and highly effective.

Didnt check to see if anyone answered, so I will give it a shot. The metal in the projectile tip becomes super heated so it burns through the armor. Kind of like a Tungsten tipped .50 cal round.

I don't claim to be an expert, but basically, the copper, which has a low melting point, forms a liquid cone which burns through the armor.

It's not true it will penetrate any US armor, the M1 has armor specifically designed to defeat this type of weapon which incidentally has been around for decades.

There are 3 ways to defeat armor.
1. High explosives to blow a hole through it.
2. Shaped charges to burn through it.
3. Solid shot to break through it. Basic speed X mass and uranium is very heavy. The DU rounds work in principle like a cannon ball, with the added advantage that it ignites. Thick armor can withstand explosives, reactive armor or ceramics will block shaped charges, but only extremely heavy armor can withstand solid shot.

I want to thank all of you gentlemen for your fine explanations. Very informative. On another front, I have a cousin that is an Apache Chopper pilot stationed near Baghdad. He was on active patrol the night of Saddam's recent party flying around the compound most of the night in anticipation of a potential attack that never came. Exciting times for a young soldier from rural Missouri.
