Will GOP Connect With Worried Workers?

Laura Ingraham, the willowy, conservative radio talker, really nailed it. She was speaking last Friday night as part of a panel discussion at a "conservative summit" in Washington held by National Review magazine. Ingraham said she was impressed by Jim Webb's televised rebuttal to President Bush's State of the Union address, particularly the part that hit on economics. In his talk, the newbie U.S. senator from Virginia launched a populist attack on the Bush economic years, railing about growing income inequality, skyrocketing CEO pay, outsourcing, and the so-called middle-class squeeze. Although Webb's stern speaking manner and improbable hair are easy to mock, Ingraham urged her fellow conservatives to pay serious attention to his message. "The party that comes off as the party that represents the American worker best is the party that wins in 2008," she said, adding that the GOP will be relegated to the political wilderness if it goes back "to being the party of the elites."

I did not say it was right ( I for the record support fair trade adn trade reciprocity), there could be and has been many 500+ post thread on that alone. But my point is this, more and more people are turning against it. And voting accordingly. They did so in 2006 and I suspect more will do so in 2008. It is a big loser for us and could really help get a rat elected.

"They have simply LOST all touch with reality!"

Do you know how much Archer Daniels Midland gets each year from our government? Is that what you call free enterprise?

I don't see where trade was that much of an issue in 2006 although it is possible it could be in 2008.

If a RAT were to run as a trade protectionist and wins, you would see a depression in this country that would make the Carter years look like boom times.

Check the races we lost in Ohio and other rust belt states. Many of the rats who ran had opposition to free trade as a major part of their campaigns.

You now when all you do is scream your slogans over and over and over instead of taking the time to actually READ the facts and respond to them, you only make yourself look foolish.

Who is the screamer on this thread? You have to have the worst case of projection in the history of FR.

1 min 38 seconds! Amazing your response time keeps getting quicker and quicker. How about you try READING the facts in the post I sent you about 5 posts back and respond to THAT instead of just spewing forth your dogma?

Amazing that your posts keep getting dumber and dumber. I didn't think that was possible.

I didn't see the local ads for Ohio but Michigan is about as rust-belt as it gets and there weren't many running on that here.

The Gov. race brought up jobs going to China but it was based on lies. Dick DeVos lost because of his ties to Amway and he flat out refused to try to win the sportsman's vote.

He endorsed affirmative action and that issue was passed by 58% to ban it.

For the record, I like Duncan Hunter and hope he gains some traction with his campaign. He might be able to use the trade issue if he doesn't go overboard with what he would do to "tweak" it a little.

He has a good point with China. Not only is fair trade one-sided with them, but we are also building up a potential future adversary.

WELL done, you got your response time down to 45 seconds. Since you all ready HAVE your response in mind why don't you just post it as soon as you finish the next post rather then even wait? Perhaps next time you MIGHT even get your response posted before I have ask the question!

So, are you SO afraid of factual reality that you simply refuse to consider ANYTHING that does not validate your pre-determined emotional dogmas? Afraid factual reality MIGHT contradict your emotional hysteria on the issue? IS that why you refuse to even THINK about the issue?

Here are my next five responses to you. Given the inane babbling nature of your posts, they will all probably apply:

You're yelling again.

Another fact-free rant.

What orifice did you pull that one out of?

Projection is treatable. Get help.

Do you really think you are making a lick of sense?

OK, that should cover me on for the next couple hours so I can go debate someone who actually has something intelligent to say.

Yes, there is a point to be made there if done correctly without going overboard. Calling for talks to open up China's markets to a more balanced trade would be good.

Correct. In other words a cult leader.

Such as the meat cutters who used to make $19 an hour but now make $7, thanks in large part to illegal immigration? The WSJ says that is the free labor market at work.

Bump. Facts are stubborn things. And the doctrinnaire idjits won't let them get in their way...let's declare war on the middle class because somehow we think its the "right thing to do". They are an inefficiency.

Better liquidated and outsourced.

And they're lazy too.

Who is going to write your pay check when demand for whatever it is you produce is cut drastically because we've shut the door to trade?

Actually the foreign "markets" have already sent the message that their markets are already closed to the precise amount of the trade deficit. We're the open market. The Only One.

And they are all laughing all the way to the bank at the PATSIES who are running U.S. foreign policy.

Meanwhile, the U.S. industrial infrastructure has been so gutted, that the defense "industry" claims that they can't even sustain 50% U.S. content anymore...and shriek bloody murder at the idea of going up to 65%...which is markedly less than the 75% Reagan insisted on...successfully.

So the real question since you doctrinnaire types are LOSING THE TRADE WAR you don't admit exists....is who is paying those paychecks now? The answer is...we are with inflated U.S. currency. They don't even publish M3 anymore because the presses are running so much.

If that's the case, it will be because of conservatives who abandon the GOP

You have cause and effect reversed.

Lower taxes, less government, fair trade policies...remember those?

Yup. And real national defense. Not pretense.

we need to take the time to explain why fiscally conservative policies and the free market are BEST for workers of all classes, and that cutting the pay of the top 500 executives to 1/20th what it is would not help

I know about 340 folks who lost their jobs 12/4/06 who aren't really in the mood to listen to the facts. As for the executives, it doesn't do your cause one damn bit of good when we continue to read about failing companies "firing" their top execs and paying them off with millions and millions of dollars while the production workers get zilch and go on unemployment.

I don't know why the GOP keep running clowns like this. The Washington State GOP did the same thing, running Mike McGavick, a big-bucks, job-cutting CEO of an insurance company, of all things, for the Senate. He got slaughtered in a 17-point blowout to a do-nothing airhead like Maria Cant-Do-Well. Running a job-cutting CEO in a place like WA State? What've they got, a death-wish? Good job recruiting there, Libby Dole...
