Anti-war protesters were allowed to spray paint on part of thewest front steps of the United States Capitol building after police wereordered to break their security line by their leadership, two sources toldThe Hill.
According to the sources, police officers were livid when theywere told to fall back by U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) Chief Phillip Morse andDeputy Chief Daniel Nichols. "They were the commanders on the scene," one source said,who requested anonymity. "It was disgusting."
After police ceded the stairs, located on the lower west frontof the Capitol, the building was locked down, the source added.
A second source who witnessed the incident said that the policehad the crowd stopped at Third Street, but were told to bring the policeline in front of the Capitol.
Approximately 300 protesters were allowed to take the steps andbegan to spray paint "anarchist symbols" and phrase such as "Ourcapitol building" and "you can’t stop us" around the area, thesource said.
Morse responded to these claims in an e-mail Sunday afternoon,explaining that the protesters were seeking confrontation with the police.
"While there were minor instances of spray painting ofpavement by a splinter group of Anarchists who were seeking a confrontationwith the police, their attempts to breach into secure areas and rush thedoors of the Capitol were thwarted," Morse said. "The graffiti waseasily removed by the dedicated [Architect of the Capitol] staff, some of whom responded on their day off to quickly clean the area."
He added, "It is the USCP's duty and responsibility to protectthe Capitol complex, staff and public while allowing the public to exercisetheir First Amendment rights … at the end of the day, both occurredwithout injury to protestors or officers."

I'm confused. What does blowing up abortion clinics have to do with the rightleft conflict and spay painting the capitol?
If leftist agitators do succeed in provoking another Kent State, the shooters this time around are more likely to be private citizens than soldiers or cops. This would add a new and unpredictable dimension to the response, one the lefties and their allies are completely unprepared to confront---it is just not part of their script since it did not happen during Vietnam protests.
9-11 and the physical presence of foreign enemies in this country bring the war home to Americans in ways the VC and NVA never did.
This might happen in response to, say, vandalism of private property by a mob (as we saw many times during anti-WTO riots) or a mob attack on an outnumbered counter-demonstrator or soldier. In these situations, one shot can easily lead to a massacre.
So, go to war already.

What was anyone to do about tens of thousands?? Would a 1000 be enough to handle the tens of thousands? What if tens of thousands of war supporters shown up? Would now be downing them because they did not start a brawl? And what did you expect to do about rioting/civil disobedience etc...??
You sit there like you were the only one, and fault folks who are voicing their opinion on what transpired. You honestly think that if any of these people knew these protesters were going to vandalize our nations Capitol while the police stood down, they would not have come??

The cops are public employees. They respond to power. Obviously, they know who has the power in this society. And it's not regular Americans. They are routinely too soft on leftist demonstrators. And it's no accident.
The White House was ringed by busses, triple deep, but the Capitol complex was open to all.
In fact, I was able to knock on Mike Mansfield's door and was graciously received.
The tear gas was all on the other end of the Mall.
This fortification of the Capitol has gone way, way too far.
The Old Guard, US Army 3rd Infantry Regiment does not answer to the Capital Police. Blood would flow before it happened.
Exactly! Clinton should be tried and dealt with over his selling military secrets to China. We all know he did, and he knows we know. It's just shrugged off. The frequency of treasonous offenses is rapidly increasing.

Who is higher up the chain of command than the Chief of the U.S. Capitol Police? Does he answer to a member of the executive branch or are Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid his bosses? Did they order him to pull back just to show the world that the protestors have power in Washington?
