How do they define "black", anyway? Is it defined by physical characteristics such as a particular skin tone or hair texture, or is it defined merely in terms of cultural identity (and thus, you are "black" only if and only if the "black" subculture accepts you as such, much like the authentication judgement of hipsters, BMX racers, or indie rockers)?

I had a friend from Bermuda who refused to classify himself as black. He claimed he was "other" or just plain Bermudan.

It isn't in terms of skin tone. I seem to remember JC Watts was denied admission to the Congressional Black Caucus.
