Ahmadinejad believes he is the Mahdi

I don't believe so.  He's cast himself in the John the Baptist role in Christianity (or the role of The Báb, who "was a Messenger of God Whose mission prepared humanity for the coming of Bahá’u’lláh") as the herald of the coming of their messiah.  The big problem is that the herald's job is to cause a world war that will destroy nearly everyone and everything and that will then bring forth the Mahdi.

And that is the significance of the timing.
