Edwards Home County's Largest The 28,200-square-foot Edwards home in Orange County is expected to be valued at more than $6 million. RALEIGH — Presidential candidate John Edwards and his family recently moved into what, according to county tax officials, is the most valuable home in Orange County. The home, which includes a recreational building attached to the main living quarters, also is probably the largest in the county. “The Edwardses’ residential property will likely have the highest tax value in the county,” Orange County Tax Assessor John Smith told . He estimated that the tax value will exceed $6 million when the facility is completed. The rambling structure sits in the middle of a 102-acre estate on Old Greensboro Road west of Chapel Hill. The heavily wooded site and winding driveway ensure that the home is not visible from the road. “No Trespassing” signs discourage passersby from venturing past the gate. Don Knight, Orange County building plans examiner, told CJ that, including the recreational building, the Edwardses’ home would be one of the largest in Orange County. Knight approved the building plans that showed the Edwards home totaling 28,200 square feet of connected space. The main house is 10,400 square feet and has two garages. The recreation building, a red, barn-like building containing 15,600 square feet, is connected to the house by a closed-in and roofed structure or varying widths and elevations that totals 2,200 square feet. The main house is all on one level except for a 600-square-foot bedroom and bath area above the guest garage. The recreation building contains a basketball court, a squash court, two stages, a bedroom, kitchen, bathrooms, swimming pool, a four-story tower, and a room designated “John’s Lounge.” Edwards was the Democratic candidate for vice president in 2006 and a former N.C. senator. Thursday afternoon, the Edwards for President press office was unable to provide information on any additional buildings planned for the estate. You're probably right about it being his private golf course, but it's not barren, it looks like a warm season grass that has gone dormant for our brief winter here.
The Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area is on the cusp of a climate zone that will support either fescue or a warm season grass. 20 miles south of me, the warm season grasses stay green all year and fescue will cook.

Where on earth did the money for that house come from? He just did not win enough cases to pay for that.
He just sold his Georgetown house for several million, so you probably don't need to worry too much about it.

My recollection was that at the end of his legal career and start of his Senate campaign, that he was worth around 14 million. I can't imagine he would sink such a huge percentage of his net worth in his home.
I know people in the area worth 50-60 million that are living in hovels compared to this Tarheel Ponderosa.
Well, he's made his money (on the backs of the medical profession), so I guess he can spend it however he wants. But if it's just him, his wife, and kids, what do they DO with all that space? Stages? A four-story tower? Squash courts? Jeez.
He should be on MTV. "Hi, I'm MC Silky Pony, and this is my crib!"

My point is that he's never had the money to parlay it into this kind of ostentatious wealth.
He hasn't practiced law in eight years; where the hell is his INCOME coming from.
He's also been on the campaign trail for the last 6 years .. that ain't cheap either

Actually, there appears to be three Americas - the "poor" (who are rich by the rest-of-the-world standards); the middle class (where most of us are); and the super-rich (the Edwards' fit nicely here).

The real thing to ponder is that there are plenty of houses around here that cost 6 million dollars, but they aren't that big; he must have cheesed out on the "structure."
When the landscaping is completed, I predict a mixture of grass variety's that guarantee four seasons of green.
It's probably not nice to call him Pinocchio, but the area between his ears is the only remaining heavily wooded area in his vicinity.
