More than 50 mayors gathered in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday for a national summit "to discuss the issue of illegal guns plaguing American cities." However, a gun rights group dismissed the conference as "all rhetoric" and presenting "no real solutions" to violent crime in America.
During its day-long event, the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition (MAIG) "discussed the importance of gun trace data, joint lobbying against harmful federal legislation, cutting-edge political strategies and the unique initiatives being undertaken by mayors across the country on this issue," the group said in a news release.
The mayors also announced the creation of "a bi-partisan Congressional Task Force on Illegal Guns," which is to be led by Reps. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.), Peter King (R-N.Y.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.).

That sounds "bi-partisan" to me, there are two "D"s and two "R"s, cant go wrong. </sarcasm>
My soon to be 5 yr old can hit the 10 ring at 20yds with his pellet rifle, after his birthday (in two weeks) he graduates to a 22.
I'm going today to purchase a Ruger KP345DPR. Nothing but good reports on it.
Criminals? Isn't it a crime to conspire to deprive people of their civil rights? Imo, there are plenty of criminals participating in the summit, just for starters.
She's introduced legislation that would dramatically expand BRADY. But one of the little known provisions will have a CHILLING effect on our VETS: I was a service member during a period of restless "peace" which we termed the Cold War. Most of the vets I know from that period won't pass the scrutiny of the VA shrinks as being competent to own a gun....'cause those docs are essentially CIVILIANS who are antigun to start with! Imagine how they'll react to returning combat veterans? How about the poor guys from my era who simply battle depression and try to get some help? Being depressed is no guarantee you're going to go postal and shoot up the streets! Far from it. Even a clinical deep depression doesn't reach this standard. I'm of the opinion that it takes a COURT adjudicating an issue before it should have a lasting impact on a man's life. Imagine the freezing effect this will have on ALL vets who might like to get some help but now, won't. Or those who have indeed already sought help and will now be vilified without reason and publicly HUMILIATED.
Did you know that in 1999 the VA turned over the names of over 90,000 vets to be included in the National Instant Check Database? Without any DUE PROCESS or FORMAL ADJUDICATION a vet can be denied his basic rights. But it goes further than vets. Commie McCarthy wants ALL mental health records included. Ever received counselling for ANYTHING? Divorce, death of a family member or marital counselling? You might be targeted to lose your guns....well be among the first ones....tell all the freeper vets about this!
Good gun. Good value. But for me, it's a service sized gun and it has a service style trigger pull. I love Ruger rifles, but can't seem to latch onto their pistols. Although I dearly LOVE my Super Single Six!
Ouch. McCarthy is truly a danger to all of our freedoms. The worst part about it is that she was elected by an electorate who thinks exactly the way she does.
Did you know that in 1999 the VA turned over the names of over 90,000 vets
This is despicable.
What are "Illegal Arms"? Who gets to make that definition?
The mayors must be running short on people who want to be victims. Because without lots of victims, you can't get the grant funds to divert for your pet projects, as in a certain southern city. You have to make the streets safer for criminals so that they can be productive and give you a crime rate to complain about. Anyway, shooting gang bangers tends to anger them and that might lead to confrontation.
False dichotomies are so transparent. Are the only two choices not letting a kid have a gun at all or allowing them to carry? Of course not.
They don't want to offend their voter base by arresting them.
What a Joke!!! Mayors are upset over "illegal arms" not "illegal aliens" - now I really am mad.
Well, it seems to me that that the previous poster decided to offer up an anecdote about how his 5 year old can handle a gun when the discussion centered on inner city crime.
If parents are the ones allowing the kid to shoot and on what terms he/she can shoot then who's the one that's in charge of the gun?
Don't be stupid. However, teaching children, especially when young, about the rules and responsibilities that go along with firearms ownership is a good thing. Kids who are taught to shoot and taken to the range regularly are less likely to engage in crime later on.
This is partly due to parental/authority figure contact, and partly because firearms are serious business and that attitude gets passed on. This is an attitude we need MORE of in todays society.
Setting up a youth shooting league would at least give these kids a chance at spending time with an "instructor" that would give them an authority figure where they otherwise might not have one in their lives.
Far from demonizing firearms ownership, it should be encouraged. These mayors aren't interested in doing anything effective to combat crime, they are just pushing a political hot-button issue to give the appearance of "doing something", all while knowing full well it will only increase dependence on government law enforcement.
Yes, guns should not be allowed in the hands of kids (IMO)
You didn't make any qualifications, so I believe that he was simply responding to an absolute statement by you, and now you're trying to say he was out of context. Personally I think that kids should be allowed access to and be traind with firearms at an early age, but not concealed carry, which would be pretty absurd.
Hey BH, what does teaching kids about safety have anything to do with them carrying?
If you want to take one line out of a post and ignore the context it was offered under then you can spin anything you want. I was talking about kids having guns in the city environments where there is crime.
Buy gold or ammo for the coming days. Ammo makes a lot of sense when there is only two choices.
When my niece turned 10, my older bro and I passed the tradition on. Now, on the verge of 13, she has her own .22 rifle and .22 pistol (locked in bro's safe, of course), and is learning to handle a .38 and .223. She wants to go hunting with us next year, and may get a .243 for her birthday. Sarah Brady/Diane "Stinky" Feinstein/Charles Schumer/Hilldebeast/Rudy, et al, this is your worst nightmare...it continues. Keep your hands off the Second Amendment!!
