NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- In the first 100 hours of the 110th Congress, the House passed a minimum wage bill that raises the federal minimum from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour and the Senate may follow suit this week, to the dismay of some small business owners.
As a result of the new law, experts say that many small firms could be forced to raise prices, cut jobs or slash the hours of the low-wage workers.

However, the impact of increased payroll costs will be somewhat limited since 23 states have already enacted statutes boosting their minimum-wage rates above the current federal rate. Eight states even have minimum-wage rates at or above the proposed rate of $7.25.
And in some states, where the job market in the area is already constricted, small businesses are already paying employees far more than the Federal minimum, even as much as $10 an hour.
"Most of the time we pay at least a dollar more (than the minimum)," said Juanita Lovezzola, owner of Lovezzola's Pizza Family Restaurant in Pooler, Georgia, where the state's minimum-wage rate is still $5.15 an hour.
Lovezzola said that she's not really worried about the new legislation. "It's hard to get help in this area," Lovezzola explained, and "if you pay a person good, they are going to stay."

It need to be at least $17.25, or even better $57.25.
I could see a lot of Congressmen proudly voting for $57.25, but $7.25? no way.

I wish people would emphasize the fact that minimum-wage jobs are not intended for raising a family. They are just that - entry-level wages for simplistic work. Somehow the public feels that a burger flipper should make enough to feed a family of five. This is insanity!! SSZ

Your comment reminds me of an incident that happened in the 80's. George Gervin, a Bball player for the SA Spurs, complained that he only made $360,000/yr and "nobody can live on that." So, a Dallas radio station took pity on the "Iceman", and started a collection to help him out. After 2 months, they sent all of the money they had collected to George " The Iceman" Gervin; all $0.63 of it.
I'm sure it improved his standard of living, but the higher tax bracket probably didn't help him any!! LOLOL!!!!!!

I work at a retirement home for 6.75 an hour and even though I love the job (I'm known as the King of Cookies there), I have no plans on doing it for the rest of my life. I plan on becoming a firefighter (if the National Guard doesn't work out) sometime in the next two years, which is going to be how I make my living.

Sick days? $9.14 an hour? Health care? I'm sorry to hear that such expenses are driving you out; you're apparently the kind of immigrant we need. But please understand that in a lot of places, there are no sick days, work days as short as three hours, $5.15 an hour and no health care; total costs that are probably significantly less than a third of your costs. Anyone surviving on that little either should be studying his homework, or staying put in Mexico.
Now, if you WERE paying that little, and couldn't afford to spend $220 dollars more to staff your shop from 7 AM to 11 PM, seven days a week, I'd suggest the reason wasn't that your costs were too high, but that customers don't like workers who can't speak English. (Your English seems excellent; I'm referring to the English spoken by the sort of workers who are working at the minimum-wage differential.)
Of course, Ice Man made more than 430 times minimum wage...
