Activist rains on Romney's parade; Says the candidate is not conservative
The Boston Globe ^ | January 22, 2007 | Michael Levenson

Posted on 01/22/2007 6:28:45 AM PST by HostileTerritory

t was 4 a.m. Brian Camenker , 53, a computer programmer, sat at his kitchen table in Newton, hunched over his Toshiba laptop. Strewn around him were papers detailing former governor Mitt Romney's alleged ties to gay youth conferences, gay judges, and abortion rights activists.

The documents, mostly printouts of news stories, represented weeks of work by Camenker and a few volunteers who had searched the Internet for material to disprove Romney's assertions that he is a conservative. Now, the results glowed on the screen in front of him, compiled into a 10,000-word dossier, "The Mitt Romney Deception."

...

In addition to quoting Romney from his Senate campaign, the report excavates several little-known items. One is a photograph of a pink flier that Romney aides distributed at a gay pride march in Boston in 2002. "Mitt and Kerry wish you a great Pride Weekend!" the flier states. "All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual preference."

Another item quotes Kathleen Henry, chairwoman of the Governor's Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth, saying Romney proposed doubling the commission's budget in fiscal year 2006, to $250,000. "It's really huge," said Henry, quoted in a Globe story. "It says to us clearly that he gets the service for what it really is."

Conservatives responded instantly.

"Through phone conservations and e-mail, it's making its rounds and there is a growing tide of concern within pro-family organizations that the governor has some real explaining to do," said J. Matt Barber , policy director for cultural issues at Concerned Women for America.

Brian Camenker ... hunched over his Toshiba laptop.

I assume there's a journalistic reason that Toshiba is mentioned. Like a kickback for product placement huh mr Levenson? Does Toshiba but ads in the Globe?

Brand name NOT required, thank you.

Even if that preference is children? There is no such thing as a "sexual preference", just different deviances. Deviances shouldn't have rights.

Who gets to decide what is deviant sexual behavior?

There are quite a few people who believe anything other than missionary in a dark, silent room is the only "normal" sex.

So if you have a PREFERENCE for the lights on, the outdoors, Barry White music in the background, etc...you are a deviant.

Ah, the age old fallback to relativism. It's no defence, and just a dodge of the obvious.

There is no such thing as sexuality, just sexual deviancies. Each pushing back the line of what is acceptable for it's own narcissistic benefit, and leaving the rest of us now facing this...

You opinion of "sexual preferences" aside, it's a statement about "equal rights" and that everyone should have 'em, not about "sexual preferences" and that everyone should be able to have sex with whom or whatever they want. Of course, he's talking about real "rights" and neither marriage nor sex is a "right" and neither should have anything to do with the government.

Every American deserves equal rights, even homosexuals.

It's a shame that so many feel that a person has to be anti-gay to be considered a conservative. That someone isn't in favor of gay marriage, I can understand. But the outright hostility to homosexuals, I don't.

Absolutely correct. Every American does deserve equal rights. Being a conservative should not mean being a bigot.

"All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual preference."

How is this being in favor of gay rights?

The problem is....and one I think you've made also...

Is if you dare criticize any aspect of homosexuality....you are branded an anti-gay homophobic.

Mitt is a moderate as per the teachings he received from the LDS church. They are all moderates, and they are ALL weaklings.

Thanks for taking my opinions into the absurd and completely missing the point. DO tell how "All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual preference" can be twisted to mean anything other than what it says....that "all citizens should have equal rights, despite the gender of whom you're having relations with." You get stuck with sex with kiddies instead of going off of what he actually said. Why are you obsessed with linking this to kiddie-sex?

I completely withdraw and rephrase my last post so you can't keep it into the absurd circle you want it to be in.

You opinion of "sexual preferences" aside, it's a statement about "equal rights" and that everyone should have 'em, not about "sexual preferences" and that every adult should be able to have sex with any other willing adult.......and still retain equal rights.

Now you can absurdly go on about prostitution and the morality of orgies......but in no way can "All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual preference" be taken in any way to mean that Mitt is pro-homosexuality or pro-homosexual marriage or any other thing you want it to mean other than what it is.

Ahem, I beg your pardon. I am more conservative than most conservatives I know, and I receive the same teachings from the same LDS church. And I am NO weakling, sir. Like any religion or church, you have have people who espouse thier own political agendas, no matter what they are learning in church. Most of the southern baptists I am friends with are very conservative and detest the name Clinton. My extended family is catholic and detest the name Ted Kennedy. If you look at the LDS community as a whole, you'll find most to be very patriotic, very conservative, and very politically active. Before you make assumptions, better check the facts.</p>
