Ha! Watch these two videos. BBC's Top Gear tries (and fails) to destroy a Toyota Hilux (sold here as the Toyota Tacoma).
After that amount of use, it most certainly IS a poor quality issue. Connecting rods just don't throw randomly. 8 years is INCREDIBLY premature.
As for maintenance, I can guarantee it was impeccably maintained.
One is, one isn't. The 87 XJ6 Vanden Plas isn't, the 2000 XKR Convertible is - and you can see where the Ford beancounters tried to save some bucks compared to the older cars. Still a very good car, though. However, the all-Ford designs (which my car is not) are turning out to be disasters.
That didn't help Jaguar, Triumph, or any other company under the British Leyland banner much..
