The Sanhedrin and Herod put him up to it, and raised up a loud, angry mob in Jerusalem for backup.
Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John did a pretty good job of recording the whole sordid affair. And Moses did a pretty good job of recording why it was all necessary, and how we ALL are in some way responsible for it.
