I have treated myself to both a desktop and a laptop, mostly because I go to conferences and was losing a lot of work time when traveling. Now with students, committee responsibilities, etc., I can't really afford to be out of touch just because I'm at a conference. When it comes to writing for hours, tho, I prefer the desktop.
