I have always thought there was way more to the Elizabeth Smart deal then we were allowed to hear and I think this one is going to play out the same way.

Could this have started out as a runaway that this sick pervert took advantage of? I wouldn't be against putting money on it. Could guilt of the child have played a part in his continuing to stay hidden in plain sight, I wouldn't be opposed to betting on that either. Is it possible that this sick monster played off those feelings? Ha, probable if not absolutely on that one.

One thing I am sure of, like Elizabeth Smart, we will never really know.

One thing I would like to present. SOOOOOO many kids are taken every year and so few get a spotlight shined upon them such as these examples. In return for the spotlight being shown on them to find them, they should reciprocate and let us all in on the rest of the story whatever it may be. Without that happening, people will just tune out when these things are spotlighted and the spotlight will lose it's effectiveness.

In media, leaving someone hanging does create drama, drama that keeps folks coming back for more. Do that too many times, or do not produce after the benefits reaped from "To Be Continued...." then people will just ignore later attempts.

This is a case where blatant exploitation can be used for something good, that being finding these missing children, I would hate to see that ruined and this tool removed.

Excellent reasons to inform and educate the public.

What about the Elizabeth Smart case did you want to know?

The guy who took her made her his so-called wife.

Its not hard to figure out what happened to her. The guy wanted to have kids.

And she was taken at 15. She also had chances to escape. We don't understand why, but I don't blame them.
I think they just learn how to survive, to live from one day to the next. Not really thinking of the future.

Here we go...Let's start with Elizabeth Smart. Yes, every blue-eyed blonde Mormon who plays the harp DREAMS of roaming the country in a burqua with two ugly middle-aged CRAZY people. And this little boy. He was 11 years old when he was taken. There is NO evidence he ran away. He took his bike to go to his friend's house. Why do some people always want to blame the victim?

frankly in these matters, I think the public's right to know ends with the kid's hopefully being found and the perp arrested and fried. No, I don't think we have a right to know the details of what the perp/perv did to the kid. That kid will have enough to face in his/her lifetime without the world knowing every last detail.

Clearly, Ben was abducted from the school bus .. not a runaway. Devlin probably has a clear MO, and in time we will probably learn that he also abducted Shawn.

Ben was only gone a few days, the police may be able to use his more recent experience to get a better picture of how Devlin handled his victims, how he managed to make Shawn dependent on him and not anxious to seek an escape.

Elizabeth Smart was taken from her parents' house. Maybe we shouldn't read too much into these cases. Sometimes a perp is only a perp. Or a perv.

No, there are not that many kidnappings. Very few. Almost all kidnappings are from broken families, where the spouse without custody takes the kid.

I keep thinking about both boys in front of the T.V. cameras. They must realize what we all think happened to them. They are now identifiable by the world and for the rest of their lives. Was it necessary to have them present at the interview? I don't believe so if protecting them is really the issue and reason for not fully disclosing what did in fact occur.

Another thought I had was I should think rather than protecting these children a good dose of testifying to what happened during trial ought to set them free of whatever bad things this pervert caused them to do. They will eventually find satisfaction in that they helped put the perpetrator away.

no matter what.....even if Shawn rode his bike all the way to Kirkwood and knocked on the Monster's door, it is still a crime to keep hidden away...as in away from parents and authorities.....an underage child..

and he wasn't in school now was he?.......

I would hope freepers would have more sympathy for YOUR child if this ever happened....than what you show this child....

1) are you trying to blame Elizabeth Smart for a scumbag taking her from her home, by gunpoint, in the middle of the night? 2) This boy was not a runaway (per the newsconference today) he was forced to go with Devlin at ---- gunpoint! He was eleven years old.

People have to start thinking like a child, not as adults.
