Columbia, S.C. -- Sen. Joseph Biden, a Democratic presidential hopeful joining fellow Sen. Christopher Dodd at Martin Luther King Jr. holiday events, said Monday he thinks the Confederate flag should be kept off South Carolina's Statehouse grounds.
"If I were a state legislator, I'd vote for it to move off the grounds out of the state," the Delaware senator said before the civil rights group held a march and rally at the Statehouse here to support its boycott of the state.
In Chicago, Sen. Barack Obama, also prominently mentioned in speculation about the White House sweepstakes in 2008, was a hit at a Rainbow/PUSH Coalition breakfast honoring King, even if he didn't deliver what much of the crowd clearly wanted: a declaration that he will run for president.
Obama received a standing ovation at the annual King scholarship breakfast when the Rev. Jesse Jackson introduced him with an approving reference to the Illinois Democrat's presidential aspirations.
"It's a long, nonstop line between the march in Selma in 1965 and the inauguration in Washington in 2009," said Jackson, the coalition's founder and a one-time presidential candidate himself.
Later, in an address at a King remembrance service at St. Mark's Church in suburban Harvey, Obama said: "I'm not making news today. I'm not here to make news. There will be a time for that."
More than six years after the Confederate flag was taken down from the South Carolina Capitol dome, its location in front of the Statehouse remains an issue at the heart of events celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy.
Jim Hanks stood across from the Statehouse with about 35 Confederate flag supporters.
"We love this flag. We love our heritage," said Hanks, of Lexington.
Some carried signs saying: "South Carolina does not want Chris Dodd,"...

This was news about 20+ years ago. I'm "surprised" that the media has forgotten about it now.
So does my house. In fact, it has a rather long paragraph describing all the people it can't be sold to or allowed to occupy it. Filipinos, interestingly, are allowed to live there as servants, but not as owners.
Trying to spin this into something proving Biden (or me) to be a racist is ridiculous. In my case, the covenants in the deed date from the original subdivision of the land in the late 1930s. Such covenants were found to be illegal by the USSC in the 1948. If you want to bash Biden for something else, have at it, but implying he's a racist because he owns (or owned) property that some long dead racist tried, in a now-illegal deed clause, to keep all-white just makes you look silly.
One of those makes him the perfect MLK day speaker, and I have no issue with Marty's hair.
Such a law would have kept Ronald Reagan (born in Illinois) from becoming governor of California, George W. Bush (born in Connecticut) from becoming governor of Texas, and Jeb Bush (born in Texas) from becoming governor of Florida.
(Those of us in the real Red states prefer to fight for our country and not just walk away from it).
You do alot of yappin' for someone who prefers to fight.
From a Blue County in a Red State,,must be tough for ya.
Thank you! I'm from SC and I don't agree with the flag being there, but my legislature agreed put it where it is and I respect their decision. I'm getting sick and tired of Biden, Dodd, and now the NCAA trying to meddle in my state's affairs.
Not to mention that Jefferson Davis could not have been the Senator from Mississippi. He was born in Kentucky.
You're not telling me anything I don't already know. My comment in regard to Biden moving to SC was pure sarcasm, as I wouldn't wish him on anyone. I lived in Delaware for 21 years, so I know.
I can't help the fact I was born a Yankee, it wasn't my choice to be born in NYC........but it was my choice to get out of there when I could, and then out of Delaware when I knew I should as well.
Then have the deed amended.
As a Democrat politician and lawyer, Joe Biden certainly should have known better and I do think he is a racist, maybe not the hood wearing kind but his recent comments about Indians certainly hints at the possibility that he is incredibly insenitive and demeaning to people of some other races.
Why bother? Even if it was amended, it would only add another page to the half-inch thick document saying that something the USSC said was illegal 60 years ago is no longer in force. It wouldn't remove the paragraph from the original 1938 deed for the whole subdivision.
Thanks!

Halftime.
Why not call him white? His mother was/is white. Why not call him a mulatto?
Biden would have been ahead in the race if he had just kept his big mouth shut. Wasn't he once caught plagiarizing?
Now it's Plugs' turn.
Rage that cannot be contained. Every four years we have to put up with this crap. Buncha dumbed down Donks tramping all over our VERY red state. They're wasting their time and pissing us off.
South Carolina Ping
Add me to the list. / Remove me from the list.
I wonder if Joe "Hairplug" Biden plagiarized that from Neil Kinnock.
Needed repeatin'.
Thanks for the ping. Looks like a no-brainer for the Dems to do this when they know they will get nothing out of the state. Obviously looking for the black vote in other states. Gonna be a lot of pandering from just about every candidate.
If you are a politician and especially one who is a lawyer, it is incredibly bad judgement to leave something like that as a caveat to property you own. By not striking language like that from his deed, Biden opened himself up to questions about his feelings regarding such racial prohibitions.
At worst Biden is a racist, at best he is stupid and careless.
Exactly right. He is doing the Dim Primary math. He doesn't care what the 70% white majority thinks, because 85% of them will ask for a GOP ballot on primary day.
He knows that 75% of the voters picking up a Democratic ballot in the primary will be black, those are the votes he's targeting.
SC is a Democratic write-off in the general election. Reddest of the red.
This was the same idiot that was rushing to assure a Rotary in SC that Deleware was a slave state and would have been with the Confederacy if the state had been geographically closer.
