Oh I know. Like someone else had said, if this had been a novel, you wouldn't believe it. I wonder how the parents are doing these days.
The story was documented in a book by Mike Echols, and made into a TV movie, I Know My First Name Is Steven. In 2003 Echols died under suspicious circumstances in jail.
I wonder how the author ended up in jail?
Also think about how Cary Stayner's horrific crime that made victims of Carole Sund, her daughter Juli and her friend from Argentina, necessitated the creation of the Sund-Carrington Memorial Foundation, which offered the large reward for Laci Peterson and has helped with others.
Hmmm, didn't know that. Just read an interesting account of that Cary Stayner crimes here in this article:

We not only have it -- we use it.
That makes me sad. Look at the date of the artilce... I wonder if a statue was ever erected of him?
Fox is reporting a 9 am ET news conference with the Hornbeck family.
Ownby family to hold a news conference at 11 am EST.
Thank you both.
Not just a quick picture, but the details of where and under what circumstances the child was abducted. Their physical characteristics that might help in identifying them.
I've long thought a cable channel would be a good thing.
"It wasn't as if Devlin was some anonymous drifter. He was from St. Louis. Some of his family members live in town. He was a 1984 graduate of Webster Groves High School. He worked at an Imo's pizza parlor in Kirkwood.
Devlin's family said they were bewildered by the news, saying Friday they had no idea that Shawn was living with Devlin.
It was a mystery, too, why Shawn hid with Devlin and did not try to contact his family. Devlin's co-worker at the Imo's, who didn't want to be identified by name, said a boy called the restaurant early Friday afternoon and said he was looking for Devlin.
The worker said he noticed on the caller-ID that the call was from Devlin's home, and asked the boy who he was.
He said the boy told him, "'I'm Shawn Wilcox. My father is a friend of Mike Devlin.'"
The co-worker said the call came in while FBI agents were questioning Devlin in Imo's back parking lot.
One expert said Shawn's case might be consistent with Stockholm syndrome, in which victims cope by identifying with their captors. Joe Carver, a clinical psychologist from Ohio who studies abusive relationships and works as a psychology supervisor at the Ohio River Valley Juvenile Correctional Facility, said that in cases such as Shawn's, "There's a tremendously unfair power discrepancy between abuser and captive."
Gee, ya think?! Wonder how many years he went to school to discover that?
There is outrage and then there is total outrage. Questions about why the boy did this or that are totally unacceptable.
Transferring responsibility for this child's plight from the evil doer to the victim is beyond the pale.
I guess it is okay to say here, but good things a lot of these subhumans are also subintelligence. How many Nissans are there with a camper and rust on the bumper and this idiot set it right out front of his apartment. And (geriatric moment here), the little girl in Ohio recently and the subhuman took her into convenience store on camera and into the pancake place where here picture was right on the door was they came in.
it was actually called "I know my first name is Stephen"
"Investigators confirmed that Devlin had no criminal record. St. Louis County court records showed two traffic cases in the late 1980s, settled with fines paid.
Some employees at the Imo's said they had joked about how Devlin's truck matched the broadcast descriptions, but never imagined their co-worker was the suspect. One said he wondered about the truck and went by the Kirkwood police headquarters Thursday morning to pass along his suspicions. The co-worker said officers checked Devlin's name, learned that he had no record and said they would check out his report."
It seems that there were more than a few people who had spotted that truck and tipped off the police. Also a neighbor in the apartment complex named Geoff Hadly was interviewed last night, as pointing the police to the truck.
How bizarre.No record
Were you thinking of Shasta Groene in Idaho? Her captor had murdered her family and then tortured her brother before killing him while with Shasta.
That monster is among the top 10 most evil people I've ever heard about in my life. He is sub-subhuman and I couldn't read or listen to accounts of what he did, once Shasta was found - even after following it and praying for her return, as I have a number of crimes like this.
I'm hardened to a lot of factual forensics stuff - but Shasta's case is just too much for me to bear. Bless her, bless her.
I agree, and I'm fearing a little for this family to be holding a press conference this morning. The two boys were released from Cardinal Glennon hospital after midnight last night, so the family hasn't had much rest yet. I worry about the questions that they will receive from the dimwitted and liberal reporters
Saying a prayer for them right now.
