Hi Varina.......about the piercings.....I tend to believe that excessive tatoes and piercings are really self-depreciating acts...it shows to me IMO almost a self-hatred....

I would expect it out of an 11 yro who in all realtiy had his innocence and his boyhood robbed by the 300# fat slob.....

under those circumstances, I think I would become a Goth or similar...

perhaps....perhaps...Shawn deliberately made himself less appealing to the Monster.....by all the piercings....thus, the Monster was looking for fresh "goods".......

Shawn already had one ear pierced (the left one, which is "correct") and in his missing flyer photos, he had a hoop earring in it.

However, the searchers always said he didn't have that same earring in when he disappeared - IIRC, they said he didn't have one in at all.

I remember it surprised me at the time since he was just 11.

I don't remember ever knowing too much about him, even though I did pay attention when it happened. He played Little League, I think, and was on a winning team - but I don't know about how good a student he was or wasn't.

This is a poignant page to note - some pix from a vigil in Oct 2003, for the 1st anniversary of his disappearance ... on a forum that Robert Cooke maintains about his 20-yo daughter Rachel's disappearance in January 2002 in Georgetown, TX.

Bless his heart, Robert has been a huge support for others in this same sad situation and has done so much to help in other searches, even going with TX EquuSearch to Aruba to look for Natalee. I pray for some good news for Robert.

Extremely possible I would say. It breaks my heart to hear reports of neighbors repeatedly hearing yelling, crying and whimpering coming from that apartment.

yeah, i went to bed angry last night thinking about that. I have no doubt that Shawn suffered. I believe Shawn didn't try and ever get away due to Stockholm Syndrome. He accepted the situation as it was, wanted to stay with her perp, but hated him all the same. Classic Stockholm! Devlin should fry!

I think it's very unusual for a child to be pierced at age 11. Can't help but make me wonder a little more about his life in general before he went missing.

Not that unusual at all. There were many pierced kids in my son's middle school. My BIL even allowed my nephew to get a tattoo at age 13 (his mother was furious..but it was too late at that point). I've seen girls 12 or so with pierced belly buttons, eyebrows, lips, etc. And kids don't necessarily have to go to a shop to get it done. They can do it to themselves, or have a friend do it. My sister put 6 holes in each ear by herself, when she was about 12. She admitted later it was a dumb thing to do - but there was nothing wrong with our life in general or our home life specifically.

My cousin has a few piercings and he is the sweetest kid, things are different. It is sadly a fad now.
My daughter wanted a upper ear lob piercing and I got that, but I said ok that is it.
Please people let us not judge this dear boy and his family

maybe to you, but my 11 year old nephew has long hair and dyes it all the time. His dad has his ear pierced and he will likely follow suit getting one eventually. It isn't that big of a deal to many and is considered not that big of a deal.

I read on time.com about the persistant banging. Apparently, Shawn like to bang along with some punk rock band. This was during hours that school was in session. The neighbor now thinks it was a cry for help. That is someone please pay attention to me.

The story of Colleen Stan. She was hitchhiking and a young couple w/ a toddler picked her up. Kept her captive for years.

I just read that Oprah is donating (rumor) $1 million to the Shawn Hornbeck foundation and that Dr. Phil is going to help with counseling. Whatever one thinks about Dr. Phil he does have the money and I suppose connections to obtain quality counseling for the boys especially Shawn. Some of these psychologists and psychiatrists are wackier than their patients.

The blame belongs 1000% on the kidnapper and any in his family that looked way despite any misgivings they had.

100% agree!

I haven't been on FR since this story broke and wondered what people had to say. I was concerned that people would question Shawn like the news media has been doing... carefully, gingerly, but doing it nevertheless.

Many years ago, the office where I worked got a new boss and I got to see a professional manipulator in action. He had been in the US Special Forces and I believe learned how to "turn" people there. The first thing he did was scare everyone to death about losing their job. Then he did subtle little things to divide people. Then he figured out who were too strong-willed to go along with his shenanigans and got rid of them. Some of these people had been the most popular and respected people in the office, but by the time they left, they were reviled by people who had admired them but a short time before. And he was left master of an admiring office staff. It was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen. If that can happen among intelligent, seasoned adults, then it can certainly happen to an 11-year-old child. Physical threats do not have to be part of the equation (although I have no idea what happened in that apt). The human mind and soul is fragile and someone who knows how to manipulate it can do enormous damage without appearing to do so on the outside. I hope that this man never sees sunlight again.

It's not something I would have let my 11-year-old do, but I think we have to be careful about wondering about his family. They appear to be wonderful and supportive. I saw a picture of his mother before he went missing and she shows her years and grief. Although they may make different decisions than I would, I just think we need to be careful about judging them or giving the appearance of judging them. Those decisions have nothing to do with his disappearance.

Totally off topic, I see from your page that you are a southerner genealogist. So am I. If you're interested in exploring names, please write privately!

Isn't that the truth. I have a friend who was sexually molested by her "Christian" psychologist.

that is great Shawn is going to get some help. Shawn has been in the hands of the devil for 4 years and it is time for him to released of that. He needs to hate what happend to him. He needs to hate Devlin, shed tears, be angry, and many other things to grieve what has happend to him. The sooner he starts this process the sooner he can heal and move on.
