More proof of how mediocre Ford was. He could get some things right, like seeing how bad Carter was. But many things went completely over his head, like Reagan's genius.

Ford was a middling guy doing a middling job in a middling way.

He flew miles above the Peanut Prez, but miles below Ronald the Great.

I've often felt that Ford's mediocre governance was what elected Carter and Carter's screw-up was what made the country give Reagan a chance. Reagan truly was a genius and I felt connected to him like no president ever before or since.

During Carter's lousy presidency, I was working two jobs and trying to put myself through college. During the drive from campus to my night job, Reagan's radio program came on. It was one of the few things which kept me going during those dark years.

One of my fondest memories as an upper classman was election night 1980. When the networks didn't call Massachusetts and New York for Carter right away as they did Rhode Island, we felt something big was happening. The other fond memory was Reagan's inauguration with a split screen-- the ceremony in Washington on one side and Tehran with the plane load of hostages on the tarmac on the other side. The plane was not allowed to take-off until Reagan took the oath of office.

The whack-job Mullahs in Iran hated Carter despite the fact he put them in power. You would think he would have learned a lesson from that day.

He flew miles above the Peanut Prez...

Any trained monkey could do that.

the problem is that ford was a political man.

He knew how to do politics and was advancing himself in the House.

The problem is the Masters of Mediocracy are STILL in charge of the Republican Party!

The mediocrity embodied in Ford with a go along with the USSR to get along with the USSR is infesting the back to 9/10 mentality of people like McCain, Guiliani, Lott, Specter.

An excellent summary. Ford couldn't carry Reagan's shoes.

I love Ronnie, but he did a sh-t job of keeping spending under control, as fiscal discipline was not popular with the "Reagan Democrats."

Mediocre and insignificant. A placeholder between elections, nothing more. Helsinki was a hollow shell of PR, like all "summit agreements" with the Soviets. The genius of Ronald Reagan was that he went to Reykjavik and had the sense and courage to walk away from a bad deal. First time it ever happened in the age of summitry and it tolled the death knell of the USSR. Ford was too obtuse to see this, even after the fall.

Yep. This board was fawning all over him when he died. He was a decent guy, but rather sucked as a President. WIN buttons to combat inflation, and the fall of Vietnam on his watch (not his fault entirely, but I never heard him stand up against the Democraps to stop them.....as a matter of fact, never heard him stand up against the Democraps period.) Lasting legacy is John Paul Stevens. When Eisenhower is considered great in Fords eyes verses Reagan, you can tell that Ford thought that the office should be occupied by a golfer, because thats mostly what Ike did while in office!

Ford was a Pygmy standing beside Reagan. Of course he was right about Carter. Carter was a bug.
