In a time when lots of people didn't have work, sharecroppers got to eat. It was a necessity for some, because welfare had not then been invented.

You're right. Farmers (whether freeholders or sharecroppers) in the Great Depression rarely starved although there was almost no "cash money" available. It was a shared experience between almost everyone - black and white alike.
