Believe me, it didn't. I grew up in that environment, and where I grew up, in the late thirties and forties, most of the sharecroppers were white, and no black was poorer.
I know, growing up in rural Mississippi, it was almost a slur, to have been known as a sharecropper's son or as in my case a grandson. It was almost the "trailer trash" of its day........
