Tuesday, January 9, 2007 "In the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll, six in 10 respondents said the war is not worth fighting, three-quarters disapproved of how Bush has handled the situation, and there was no consensus about how the United States should adjust its policies in Iraq. Only 17 percent called for an increase in U.S. forces, the "surge" believed to be a centerpiece of the new Bush plan."

They polled the people in the news room along with the delivery boy who walked in...guess who it was that supported the "surge".

Americans aren't stupid. They've watched the military's hands tied, our boys prosecuted for panties on heads, and politicians making strategy.

Why would they have confidence any of this would change now?

Bingo. We can only base our decisions on what we've seen in the past, and what we've seen is a big police action, not a war.

The polls are false.

I did a public debate with college students as an audience and over 200 students voted 65% to stay in Iraq.

If college students vote at that rate, its completely plausible that the public supports this war as is or with increased action.

College students ought to have every reason to be skeptical-- at least that what the media tells us :)

It is all about framing. The media frames negativity and then polls it right out of the air it created.

Exactly. I truly believe that the American people want to see our brave soldiers killing the enemy. The media NEVER reports that is what they're doing. All we get are stories of soldiers behaving badly. Or, soldiers doing social work one minute and being blown up by roadside bombs the next. NEVER do we hear of military victories. Just a death count of Americas bravest. It's a PC war and I can't understand why.

Funny, I just voted on the troop increase on Vote.com. 30,000 people have voted and 77% approve the increase. If 30,000 people do not constitute a valid sample I don't know how many it takes.

Remember, we used these same arguments on this forum before the election, about how polls are false, etc. Look where that got us. In fact, the ABC-Washington Post poll was one of the most accurate generic predictors of the 2006 elections, prediciting a 6-point win in the generic for the Democrats in their final poll (the actual number was 6.5).

I refuse to obey the polls.

I support President Bush.

Is support the war on terror.

Support our troops staying in Iraq.

I am the rhetorical counter insurency.

Being "realistic" is unrealistic.

Good, we can all refuse to obey the polls, and I agree that such a refusal is a highly principled posture. However, don't act as if the polls are not real.
