This guy is even more reprensible, since he specifically joined up for the purpose of creating dischord from within the Army. He planned the whole thing before he ever volunteered.

Article 15 and begin procedural documentation for a special courts martial. Remove all his numbers, and reduction in rank to Second LT. Provide him his Big chicken Dinner (BCD Bad Conduct Discharge - worse than a dishonorable), and send his sorry butt on his way.
To: jazusamo
If only, if only... BCD or DD discharge and fine him for the training, education and other benefits he received. People might think twice about getting on the gravy train if there were consequences to not fulfilling their part of the bargain.

A lot of the comments here reflect anger at this Lt -- with good reason.
I'd like to make a different comment. What's up with this liberal newspaper writing such a sensible editorial? Is the left trying to act more responsible now that they're getting back in power?

Ehren Watada should executed for cowardice, desertion and treason. But no one in this country has the backbone to give this modern day Benedict Arnold his well deserved just reward.

Hmmmmmm. Maybe a subpoena to reporters isn't such a bad idea after all. They may think before they speak.

the larger story here, it seems to me, is the
infrequency with which this sort of thing happens. if the war was truly going as badly as it is being reported, and it is so deeply unpopular, you would expect more cases like this one than the occasional one-off.
uh, wouldn't you?
