That's really odd... seems like too big an area for a natural gas leak. Seems like even a pretty large release of natural gas would disperse quicker than that.

The scientists among us can correct me, but I believe natural gas is heavier than air, and in still air will collect at ground level...

If there's no wind to speak of, accumulations are possible...

FAE on a grand scale, maybe?? (Fuel-Air-Explosive)

I can smell it here in my building in West Midtown. If this thing is covering an area this large, my guess is that it's more likely to be from an industrial source somewhere upwind.

I keep coming back to this. If there were this large a leak, CONED could pinpoint it pretty quickly. That's a lot of real estate not just getting a scent, but a STRONG scent. Something doesn't add up.
