YORK -- People all over a large part of New York City are smelling a gas, and it's not clear where it's coming from.
Numerous people have called 911 concerned about the odor. Con Edison, the Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating.
PATH service has been suspended into the 33rd Street station. Service is still going into the World Trade Center station.
Macy's department store has been evacuated, according to reports.
There also are unconfirmed reports of a similar smell across the river in New Jersey.
People between Midtown and Battery Park are reported to be smelling it. At NBC headquarters in Rockefeller Plaza, the odor is very strong. One person who works on the sixth floor at 30 Rockefeller Center says it's so strong people are leaving the building.
At one major office building at 37th and 7th, employees have been told that Con Edison is looking into a smell, and they should remain inside until they hear otherwise.
Mayor Bloomberg is expected to be asked about it at a 9:30 briefing with the media.

I used to work in midtown. I remember going outside my building and there would be a hundred or so people just puffing away. Then back up the elevator.

The weather is dreadful here. Pouring, clouds very low, following days of way above temperatures. Over the weekend it was 70 plus degrees in NYC.
No way for the odors to dissipate with the air so heavy.

there would be no need to do it with a stink If you wanted to see how people responded, maybe.
How else would they have learned that people would continue to work and open FR. (just kidding...kind of:')

The rotting smell of corruption in New Jersey is overwhelming.
At least there's hope: Finally, it's getting national coverage.

I should think with the availability to monitor, detect, and analyze air quality, that's already been determined to be an odor in the sulfur dioxide family - prolly emitted from sewer treatment and pulp paper plants and forced close to the ground by weather inversion.
We have a paper mill 30 miles to the east of my town and in "bad" weather, the outside air smells like a den of surprised skunks let loose in a one room apartment.

Actually the effect is over such a large area that inversion makes scents as an explanation. There simply isn't anything human that is likely to raise such a stink. Maybe a combination of an inversion and a real skunk. Seems the gas "stink" to alert people to a gas leak is based on the very natural skunk. In the wild, a skunk can be smelled for miles - with in inversion, further. Just a guess...

The olefactory organ - a marvelous invention.
Love horses, you will love the smell of horse manure - not so with dogs & cats.
Love your baby - the diaper won't offend you. Others' babies are different.
The smell of money - priceless!

My apologies to the serious on board, ...........
Whiskey bottles, and brand new cars
Oak tree you're in my way
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose
One more drink fool, will drown you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Now they call you Prince Charming
Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes
Say you'll be all right come tomorrow
But tomorrow might not be here for you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Hey, you're a fool you
Stick them needles in your arm
I know I been there before
One little problem that confronts you
Got a monkey on your back
Just one more fix, Lord might do the trick
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Ooooh that smell
Can't you smell that smell
Ooooh that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
