YORK -- People all over a large part of New York City are smelling a gas, and it's not clear where it's coming from.
Numerous people have called 911 concerned about the odor. Con Edison, the Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating.
PATH service has been suspended into the 33rd Street station. Service is still going into the World Trade Center station.
Macy's department store has been evacuated, according to reports.
There also are unconfirmed reports of a similar smell across the river in New Jersey.
People between Midtown and Battery Park are reported to be smelling it. At NBC headquarters in Rockefeller Plaza, the odor is very strong. One person who works on the sixth floor at 30 Rockefeller Center says it's so strong people are leaving the building.
At one major office building at 37th and 7th, employees have been told that Con Edison is looking into a smell, and they should remain inside until they hear otherwise.
Mayor Bloomberg is expected to be asked about it at a 9:30 briefing with the media.
Just give it time! :-)
Jeez--how many?
Gas leak + spark = Boom.
A spark, charge might ignite gas?
I figured for Jersey the smell would actually be an improvement.
CONED looking at other leaks than natural gas - maybe NJ or just the chemical associted with natural gas
crap, my best friend and all her coworkers can smell it. She works at a Pyschiatric hospital in New York.
How about a feeder or smaller line then? Did they say if they have those monitored the way they do the mains?
Yes; if it's a gas leak (which is questionable at this point, given that the gas company in NYC don't show any problems with their system) then an electrical spark could lead to a fire.
If the system in New Jersey is leaking and the smell wafting over NYC, then people in NYC are not in danger of touching a light switch.
Thanks. Guess I should have figured that one out.
No reports about whether it could be a feeder or smaller line, mewzilla.
Good post, Thx.
all the anchors are filling air time talking about NOTHING
FOX just panned the city with their roof cam. It looks suspiciously like a thermal inversion, which would explain this entire thing. The smells from refining in New Jersey are trapped, and cannot get out as is usual. This has happened a dozen times in the past 30 years or so if my memory serves me correctly.
Per 1010WINS: NYPD says air quality tested and is fine, albeit stinky.
It doesn't hurt to see things like that reiterated just to remind people. A lot of us never had gas and don't know the "rules" in the event of a leak.
Oh pssshawwww....boom my a......around here whenever gas escapes it's only polite to strike a match.....
You win. LOL!
