Our priorities begin with defeating the terrorists who killed thousands of innocent Americans on September 11, 2001--and who are working hard to attack us again. These terrorists are part of a broader extremist movement that is now doing everything it can to defeat us in Iraq.
In the days ahead, I will be addressing our nation about a new strategy to help the Iraqi people gain control of the security situation and hasten the day when the Iraqi government gains full control over its affairs. Ultimately, Iraqis must resolve the most pressing issues facing them. We can't do it for them.
But we can help Iraq defeat the extremists inside and outside of Iraq--and we can help provide the necessary breathing space for this young government to meet its responsibilities. If democracy fails and the extremists prevail in Iraq, America's enemies will be stronger, more lethal, and emboldened by our defeat. Leaders in both parties understand the stakes in this struggle. We now have the opportunity to build a bipartisan consensus to fight and win the war.

Actually, their battle plan is a good one, and is the product of deep study of us and our culture.
They are like the Japanese before WW II.
Their will can be broken, as we did Japan's - but the price will be similar.
They have lower IQs than the Japs, but they are more numerous.
Yes, nuking them might break their wills, in fact, it's probably the only thing that can. With that said, the public does not have the appetite for that, and it wouldn't be prudent to do at this juncture.
So our options are limited to the ineffective.
Let me ask you a question. If an Al Qaeda terrorist is reading your gloom and doom post isnt he going to feel comfort with your defeatist attitude? Yes he will and you sir together liberals and their media are giving aid and comfort for the enemy. Shame on you.
Go home. Stay home. Leave us alone.
Other than that, I can't think of a darn thing I want this current Congress to do.
Screw the opinion polls. Level any area with insurgent activity. We have the tech to do so even without using nukes.
Your point is well taken, but there is a lot of truth in this criticism. Anyway, what have you done to support the war against Islamofascists lately?
I have translated important Iraqi documents that show Saddam regime very strong relation to terrorism and Saddam regime constant work on WMD programs. You can check these documents right here:
Not at the top of the list. US's enemies within...and natural allies of Jihad... are not trying to kill us. Jaime and Ted and the other socialists would jump with glee at the opportunity to take the focus of the CIC from where it is, and have it out in the pages of the NYT and other party instruments. Bush is not going for the bait. Good on 'im.
Any Bush message is tinged with the reality that he lead us to defeat, thereby ending the tax cuts (which will end without affirmative action by Congress), preserving the death tax, and raising Social Security taxes (which increase in 2007. Obviously, it would have been more productive to address earmarks when the Republicans controlled Congress. Finally, there is the Iraq quagmire. Republicans have no chance to win the White House in 2008 unless the party's nominee is freed from the Iraq albatross. We'll have to wait to see what the new Iraq strategy is. Speculation centers on a temporary 40-50K troop increase, thereby increasing U.S. casualties. In November, the American people voted for change in Iraq. Either Republicans respond, or Democrats will control the entire government beginning in 2009.
The problem goes even deeper. The Shiites and Kurds want no part of an Iraqi state.
What the incoming Congress can do for America (or at least me) is not really describable on a family site.
Everything after the note of disrespect may be ignored, but the reference to the American public is also misaddressed. FedGov is the public.
When hostilites commence expect $200 oil.
BUMP
What a stupid response!
On a daily basis I spread the words here and in my social setting about how we need to keep our resolve strong in the war on terror and that we are winning this war against the terrorists and we will eventually achieve the ultimate victory. On a daily basis, I fight the defeatists, cut and run, and those who are giving aid and comfort to the terrorist enemy through their defeatist attitude.
Also I have done something very recent that I believe is good for our National Security but I am not going to share it with you.
I think we have a concensus here.
You are one of the most notable FReepers and you belong in the Hall of Fame.
But there is a time and a place for everything including pessimism.
Another FReeper who belongs in the hall of fame is HMacDougald a/k/a Buckhead. Here is what he had to say recently:
I agree completely that the narrowness of the victory in 2004 was quite striking and worthy of study. The race should have resembled the blow out of Dukakis. Kerry was no less ridiculous on national security than Dukakis, and that was the preeminent issue. Plus, we were in the middle of a very robust economic expansion, which strongly favors the incumbent, and Bush is a good and likable candidate, whereas Kerry was a clown on the order of Thurston Howell, III.So why was it so close?
My guesses are roughly: 1. Its not the same country it was in [1988]. Its demographically much more favorable to Democrats than it was [then]. 2. The whole of the lefts cultural machinery was fully engaged in the demonization of Bush 24/7/365 for two full years leading up to the election. Movies, TV (news and entertainment), newspapers, magazines, party machinery at every level, political ground game, PACs, 521s, Soros millions, etc. etc. were all fully mobilized against Bush. 3. The Bush White Houses failure to treat the domestic political front as an extension of the battlefield in the war on terror - despite the enemy conspicuously declaring that it was one of their strategic centers of gravity. Consequently, the Bush White House left unanswered for the most part the constant demonization from the left, and this tilted the playing field against them.
I appreciate your optimism, jveritas, but it seems naive in my humble opinion.
Today, the Democrats are retaking power again after 12 years and I am not optimistic for the future. In my opinion, the way Bush has conducted the Iraq War is the main reason.
Iraq could have been and should have been pacified already using extreme and overwhelming force. I don't believe that was done.
The experimentation with Democracy in the middle of a death struggle has been a mistake.
President Bush has treated his enemies, both foreign and domestic, as if he is unaware who the enemy is.
I pray for President Bush, our troops, and the success of the United States every day and I will continue to pray.
Please keep up the good work. I am grateful.
