ISLAMABAD: Pakistani security forces were hunting a handful of Al Qaeda fighters on Wednesday believed to have been wounded in an air strike on an alleged militant training camp in South Waziristan a day earlier, army spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan said. Sultan said the army had information that five or six foreigners with Al Qaeda links were in the camp.
Among those who escaped was Abu Nasser, who holds a senior position in Al Qaeda, security sources said. The attack by rocket-firing helicopter gunships on Zamzola village killed up to 20 militants, intelligence officials said.

Masses protest Pakistani hit on alleged al-Qaida hide-out

Hundreds of religious hard-liners chanting "Jihad!" staged rallies in a Pakistani town against an army airstrike on a suspected al-Qaida hide-out and claimed it had killed innocent laborers, police and witnesses said Wednesday.
In the protest, about 1,000 supporters of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) party marched through Tank, a city about 160 kilometers north of the scene of Tuesday's attack in the South Waziristan tribal region near the Afghan border that the army said killed eight militants.
"They killed innocent laborers. There were no foreigners or [militant] training centers," witnesses quoted rally leader Maulana Tahir as saying.
Activists of the JUI, a pro-Taliban Islamic group in the provincial government, chanted, "Jihad! [holy war]" during the protest and "Death to Musharraf!" - referring to Pakistan's military leader, President Gen. Pervez Musharraf, a key US ally.
A tribal militant vowed to take revenge for the airstrike, the British Broadcasting Corporation reported on its Urdu-language news Web site Wednesday. "We will take revenge within 10 to 15 days," the BBC quoted Baitullah Mehsud as saying.
Tuesday's operation has forced him to fight the Pakistani army, Mehsud said, according to the report. Mehsud is believed to be the leader of a band of militants from the area that was the scene of Tuesday's bombing. In February 2005, Mehsud was granted amnesty after promising that he would not attack security forces or harbor foreign militants.

The sentences represent the first successful prosecutions against members of an alleged global network of "homegrown" extremists, whose tendrils stretched from the Middle East to Western countries such as Canada.

Mr. Weisburd is acknowledged as a leading authority on extremist networks. His site, known as Internet Haganah, exists to expose jihadist activity on the Internet.
One suspect that Haganah has long tracked is Younis Tsouli, a 22-year-old arrested in Britain two days after the Bosnian suspects were rounded up. It is alleged that he is the hacker who went by the name Terrorist 007 on the Internet. Now charged with conspiracy to murder, plotting an explosion and stealing money, his trial is set to begin Monday in London.
Preliminary hearings for four young people charged in the Toronto case are also to begin on Monday. Like most of the 18 accused, the youngest suspects are charged with attending a terrorist training camp. A core group of seven adults further stands accused of plotting to detonate truck bombs against government targets.
The alleged ringleader of the Toronto plot was reportedly in contact with Terrorist 007 as well as two other young men now facing trial in the United States. The Atlanta-based suspects allegedly videotaped U.S. targets in Washington and sent the surveillance to Terrorist 007 in Britain."

KABUL: Afghan intelligence officials said yesterday a captured Taliban spokesman had said the extremist movement's fugitive leader is hiding out in Pakistan with the protection of that country's spy agency.
Abul Haq Haqiq, who was known to the media as Mohammad Hanif, was arrested in the eastern province of Nangarhar on Monday.
During interrogation he said fugitive Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, who has a multi-million-dollar bounty on his head, was in the western Pakistan city of Quetta, the Afghan intelligence agency said in a statement. "He is under the protection of the ISI in Quetta," it quoted Hanif as saying. ISI is Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency. Haqiq was not presented to the media for questioning and the authenticity of the claims could not be verified.
The Afghan intelligence agency, called the National Directorate of Security, said the 26-year-old Haqiq had also said the regular suicide attacks in Afghanistan were plotted in a madrassa (religious school) in Pakistan's Bajaur tribal area. He also claimed former ISI chief Hamid Gul had financed the attacks.

BALAD RUZ, Iraq – After a nine-day operation in the Turki Village area, soldiers from 1st Brigade, 5th Iraqi Army, together with 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, defeated “The Council,” a known terrorist group which has historically targeted families and tribes with violence throughout the region. Coalition Forces continue to maintain a presence to further the peace and stability of the area.
“The group, made up of former Ba’ath Regime members, Al Qaeda and Sunni extremists, refused to participate in any political dialogue and preferred attacking innocent civilians in the Diyala province, killing as many as 39 civilians in one kidnapping and mass murder in November,” said Col. David W. Sutherland, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division commander, and senior U.S. Army officer in the Diyala province. More than 50 of the council’s terrorists responsible for the November murder of 39 civilian were captured during the recent operations.
“The fear of the people and the weapons used by these individuals are used to attack the core of Iraqi values and beliefs. They are interested in preventing individual human rights and freedoms that the people of this region want so much,” Sutherland said.
The families and tribes that form the basis of this society recognize this achievement, Sutherland added. Phone calls to report criminal activity to the Police Coordination Center has increased 131 percent since the beginning of the operation.
After seizing a safe house, with a white flag signifying surrender, detaining dozens of middle-aged males and questioning local residents, the defeat of “The Council” was validated.
This defeat has been achieved through offensive operations designed to isolate the terrorists away from the population; and by using the Iraqi Army, supported by U.S. Air Force, Special Operations Forces, and elements of the 3-1 Cav to bring the terrorists to justice, he said.
“Additionally, non-kinetic engagements using psychological operations, information operations, and civil military operations were brought to bear to shape and sustain the battlefield,” Sutherland said.
“Through questioning, we learned that The Council had a plan to attempt to defeat our forces,” said Lt. Col. Andrew Poppas, 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment commander. “However, due to our kinetic capabilities, we were able to defeat the enemy and broke his will to fight. They admitted in questioning that our forces beat them.”
During the operation, which began Jan. 4 with a combined air and ground assault, Soldiers unearthed numerous weapons caches and killed approximately 100 terrorists throughout the Turki Village area.
Dozens of supply caches included more than 1,150 Katusha rockets, more than 1,000 rocket-propelled grenades, 170 anti-tank missiles, anti-tank mines, more than 1,000 small-arms munitions, 1,050 DSHKA rounds and sensitive terrorist documents.
Since the defeat of “The Council,” Soldiers have been focusing on interacting with the local populous, maintaining a presence and reinforcing the security and stability of the region. The IA will maintain a permanent presence, while CF are focusing on reconstructing roads, essential services and other basic services to help the people of Turki.
“The populous continues to express their support for the Iraqi Security Forces,” said Poppas.
“This operation is already having an impact on the political framework within Diyala,” said Lt. Col. Scott Jackson, the deputy brigade commander. “Elements of different tribes are moving to the political discussion that have been afraid to voice their opinions due to fear imposed by the terrorists.”
Governor Ra’ad Rasheed Hameed Al-Mullah Jawad Al-Tamimi said, “I am very proud of how the Iraqi Army performed during this operation; they demonstrated skill and determination in the challenging conditions.”
“Defeating the terrorists south of Balad Ruz has made conditions in Baqubah, as well as the whole province better,” Ra’ad said.
“Of the over 25 major tribes and 100 sub-tribes in the province, many are now seeing the capabilities of the Iraqi Security Forces and gaining confidence in them as a professional force to be reckoned with,” Sutherland said.
“The long-term end state is that the local population supports the Iraqi and Diyala government due to their complete disdain of anti-Iraqi forces,” he said. “This action drives a wedge between the terrorists and the people because they understand that the terrorists’ ring of terror has been defeated by their own forces.”
“The sects within the area have the opportunity to interact with a common respect without fear or intimidation,” said Jackson.
“This operation clearly was a significant tactical success for CF, IA, and most importantly, the citizens of Turki and surrounding areas,” said Sutherland. “The long-term affects we hope to achieve are stability for economic growth, increased political action for all parties and self-reliance for the Iraqi government and security forces.”

Chinese SUV maker Chang Feng appeared at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show with its latest entry in the sport four-wheel-drive market — the Liebao.
The Chinese automaker expects to enter the U.S. market before the end of the decade with its line of four-wheel-drive sport vehicles and trucks.
Cheng Feng Liebao is China's No. 1 SUV producer with a third of the Chinese market, and total group production of about 100,000 vehicles last year. Chang Feng exports reach around the world with sales in Europe, the Middle East, South America and Africa.
However, underneath the Swiss-cheese-like symbol of Chang Feng lies the real roots behind the Liebao.
Chang Feng publicly states that it is a "state-owned" company, run and controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. What Chang Feng does not like to publish is that it is a Chinese army-owned company, formerly known as the No. 7319 Factory of the "Chinese People's Liberation Army Chang Feng (Group) Co.,Ltd."
Despite its civilian sales, PLA Chang Feng still sells vehicles and parts to the military. In fact, the company recently donated a fully equipped Liebao SUV to the PLA war museum, decked out in green paint and sporting a large cannon mounted on the back."

40 Detained in Iraq; Weapons Caches Discovered

WASHINGTON, Jan. 17, 2007 – Coalition forces detained 40 suspected insurgents and discovered large weapons caches this week during raids throughout Iraq, military officials said.
Coalition forces detained 28 suspected terrorists yesterday during raids at several foreign terrorist safe houses across Iraq. One senior al Qaida IED coordinator and a weapons dealer in Mosul were among those detained, and in Ramadi ten suspects were detained for their alleged association with foreign terrorists.
Elsewhere, nine suspected terrorists were detained and a cache of weapons was destroyed in Yusufiyah. The cache contained AK 47 assault rifles, anti-tank mines, mortar switches and ammunition rounds.
Also yesterday, soldiers from the 1st and 7th Iraqi Army divisions, with coalition advisors, captured two insurgent cell leaders during operations in Karabilah and Karmah. The insurgents were allegedly smuggling weapons and foreign fighters into Iraq to facilitate improvised-explosive-device attacks against Iraqi civilians and security forces. Iraqi forces also detained four additional suspects for questioning.
In four other operations in Baghdad yesterday:
-- Soldiers from 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, with 2nd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army division troops, detained three suspected insurgents during searches in the Doura neighborhood. The troops also discovered a weapons cache containing four AK 47 assault rifles, four loaded magazines, one 60 mm mortar, and two sets of police body armor.
-- Coalition forces detained one suspect and seized a weapons cache during operations in the Adhamiyah area. The cache belonged to an insurgent cell responsible for IED and car bomb attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces.
-- Soldiers with 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, and 1st Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army Division, recovered four 155 mm artillery rounds, one 120 mm mortar round, two 81 mm mortar rounds, one bag of explosive powder, one IED, seven rocket-propelled-grenade rounds, and two rocket-propelled-grenade launchers.
-- Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army unexpectedly found and released a kidnapping victim in Ameriyah.
In other operations earlier this week:
-- Coalition forces captured two insurgents during operations Jan. 15 in western Baghdad. The detainees are allegedly responsible for transporting and financing foreign fighters responsible for attacks against Iraqi civilians and security forces.
-- Soldiers from 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, captured six suspected insurgents and recovered a large weapons cache containing assault rifles, ammunition and grenades Jan. 15 during security operation in eastern Baghdad.
-- Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, "Golden Dragons," 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, with Iraqi troops, found and destroyed a weapons cache Jan. 15 near a rural road along Mulla Fayad Highway.
