Yet the American government has failed to collectively use this formidable brain-power 5+ years after the attack by Jihadists on the American homeland to develop a truly strategic plan to fight the global threat of Jihad and Islamist extremism. In one of the most complex wars in American history, rather than starting with holistic, big-picture thinking towards the challenges and prioritizing resources and actions accordingly, America has spent much of the past five years after 9/11 in reactive and bureaucratic churning.

Afghan forces find 40 truckloads of weapons

KHOST: Afghan forces have uncovered 40 pick-up truckloads of weapons, said to belong to Taliban insurgents, that were hidden in mountain caves near the border with Pakistan, a military general said on Tuesday.

The cache included machine guns, rockets and explosives, and was found this week in eastern Paktika province’s Gomal district, some 40 kilometres from the border, army general Samiul Haq told AFP.

The general said some of the weapons appeared to have been deposited recently while others may have been put there “a long time ago”. “But there is no doubt it is a Taliban weapons cache. Taliban had control over it,” the general said. Intelligence reports led the troops to the discovery, he said. He was not more precise about the quantity of weapons except to say they would fill 40 four-by-four pick-up trucks.

WASHINGTON: Fighter jet parts and other sensitive U.S. military gear seized from front companies for Iran and brokers for China have been traced in criminal cases to a surprising source: the U.S. Defense Department.

In one case, federal investigators said, contraband bought at auction from Defense surplus stocks was delivered to Iran, which President George W. Bush had in his "axis of evil" grouping. Just Tuesday, the State Department branded Iran as the world's worst exporter of terror

In the Iran case, a Pakistani arms broker convicted of exporting U.S. missile parts to Iran resumed business after his release from prison. He purchased Chinook helicopter engine parts for Iran from a U.S. company that had bought them in a Pentagon surplus sale. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents say those parts made it to Iran.

Middle East Newsline reports that on his recent trip to Moscow, Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad received briefings on the technical specifications and potential applications of one of Russia’s most effective air- and missile defense systems: the S-300PMU2. The reason for Assad’s interest in the advanced weaponry appears to be the need for expanded deterrence against Israel. "Syria wants a strategic air defense system that would present a major threat to Israeli warplanes," a source has told the news agency. "I think Assad will buy and deploy the S-300 over the next few months."

A large group of robbers in several boats armed with long knives and wooden sticks boarded a roro ship. Robbers tried to attack the duty crew on deck. Crew retreated to the bridge and raised alarm. Robbers broke two containers, stole cargo and escaped. Duty Officer tried to call port control but no response.

08.01.2007 2335 LT at Lagos Roads, Nigeria.
Robbers armed with guns and knives boarded a product tanker during STS cargo operations. They attacked duty crew, tied him up and asked for key and security lock code for the cargo control room. Duty Officer noticed the robbers and raised alarm. Robbers stole personal belongings from the duty crew, ship's stores and escaped. Duty crew sustained injuries on his left hand. Port control informed.

Ever since September 11, 2001 political leaders of every stripe have been telling us that another catastrophic attack is inevitable. Consensus regarding terrorism begins and ends with the cliché "when not if."

Our leaders speak as if they can avoid responsibility for the next attack by predicting it. They don't seem aware that a grieving and enraged public isn't likely to get much satisfaction from a chorus of "I told you so."

Let's suppose that conventional wisdom is uncharacteristically correct about the prospects for more terrorism in the United States. How will the American public deal with the political class that saw attacks coming years ahead and frittered away the opportunity to deter them?"

MOSCOW -- Russia said yesterday it had delivered new anti aircraft missile systems to Iran and would consider more requests from Tehran for defensive weapons, immediately drawing criticism from the United States. The United States accuses Iran of seeking nuclear arms and undermining security in the Middle East. The United Nations has banned sensitive nuclear trade with Iran but there are no sanctions on conventional weapons. Convicted felon with ties to Al Qaeda training camp ordered deported


TACOMA - U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last week prevailed in its legal effort to obtain a deportation order for a convicted felon who was actively involved in attempts to establish an al Qaeda terrorist training camp in south-central Oregon.

Semi Osman, 35, a native of Sierra Leone, was ordered deported by Immigration Judge Kenneth Josephson on Friday.

A former resident of Tacoma and Bly, Oregon, Osman, first caught the attention of authorities in December 1999 when a police officer stopped his vehicle near Bly because of a malfunctioning brake light. Two passengers in the vehicle were later identified as members of al Qaeda who were visiting Bly with Osman as their host. A federal investigation led to the arrest of Osman on immigration and firearms violations. He was subsequently convicted of possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. He also entered into a fraudulent marriage to obtain a "green card."

After serving time in federal prison on the firearms charge, Osman was later convicted of sexual abuse of a 10-year-old child and served time in the Walla Walla State Penitentiary. Following his release, he was required to register as a sex offender.

"ICE will not stand by and allow the United States to become a haven for those who put the safety of our citizens at risk," said Dorothy Stefan, Chief Counsel for ICE in Seattle. "Those who are convicted of serious crimes are not welcome in this country."

Osman remains in ICE custody while he appeals his removal order.
