"6 Abu Sayyaf gunmen slain in Philippines"
Sat Jan 6, 7:51 AM ET
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MANILA, Philippines - Philippine troops on Saturday killed six members of the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf group, including one wanted by the United States for involvement in the kidnapping of Americans, a military spokesman said.
Philippine navy and army special forces troops backed by marines clashed with a group of rebels in waters off Panglima Sugala, southern Tawi-Tawi province Saturday, killing all six gunmen on a boat, said Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro.
One of those killed, Judnam Jamalul, is among 17 Abu Sayyaf leaders and members who are wanted by the United States for involvement in attacks on American citizens.
The Abu Sayyaf abducted three American tourists and 17 Filipinos from a resort in May 2001. One of the Americans was beheaded soon after the kidnapping and another was killed during a military rescue operation the following year."

Would-Be NYC Subway Bomber Faces Prison
By TOM HAYS
NEW YORK Jan 7, 2007 (AP) Shahawar Matin Siraj was either a naive stooge lured into a phony bomb plot or a homegrown terrorist determined to inflict misery on New Yorkers as revenge for wartime abuses of Iraqis.
Lawyers for Siraj convicted of conspiring to blow up one of the city's busiest subway stations and prosecutors painted the conflicting portraits recently in court papers in advance of his sentencing Monday in federal court......

"Suspicious truck stopped at the Port of Miami-Dade; cargo was not auto parts"
By ALDO NAHED, JAY WEAVER and ROB BARRY
anahed@MiamiHerald.com
Video | 3 questioned after security scare at Port of Miami
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Authorities discovered two 55-gallon containers in the back of a truck operated by an Iraqi man who was stopped before entering the Port of Miami-Dade on Sunday.
Miami-Dade police detained the man, who appeared nervous and would not make eye contact during questioning, authorities said. The man said he was alone but did not the proper paperwork to enter the port to make his delivery.
He said he was alone, but it turned that there were two other Middle Eastern men in the back of the truck. Also, the driver's manifest indicated he was carrying auto parts, but nothing of that kind was found in the truck, authorities said.
FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela said an Iraqi truck driver trying to get into the port was in custody after the cargo in his semi did not match what was declared on its manifest and he lied about being alone.
Federal sources said the manifest described the cargo was auto parts, but that is not what was found. Instead, authorities found two 55-gallon containers in the back of the truck.
Miami-Dade fire's hazmat unit was examining those containers.
Authorities also found a second Iraqi national and a Lebanese national hiding inside the 18-wheeler, the official said.
''Right now, we're trying to figure out what these men were trying to do,'' said Judy Orihuela, the FBI spokeswoman. A press conference will be held later today at the port.
The men may face state charges."
