Wanted ETA terrorist arrested with manuals on making explosives
Fri, 26 Jan 2007
A member of the ETA terrorist organisation has been arrested near the French border, as he was travelling to Cataluña by train from the French town of Perpignan. The arrest was made in Port Bou, in Girona.
The Interior Ministry has named him as Iker Aguirre Bernadal, and says he was carrying six forged national identity documents, 3,000 in cash, and manuals on manufacturing explosives. Reports indicate that he may have been planning to set up a stable ETA commando on the Mediterranean coast.

Unknown assailants using gas cannister-based explosives attacked two Greek banks
ATHENS. Jan 25, 2007. Unknown assailants using gas cannister-based explosives attacked two Greek banks in central Athens on Thursday night, a police source said, quoted by AFP.
Situated a block apart on one of Athens' central streets, the two branches, respectively of the Emporiki and National Bank of Greece chains, suffered minor damage, the fire department said. Arson attacks against Greek and foreign banks and car dealerships are commonplace in Athens, usually occurring in the early hours of the morning and timed to cause no injury. The authorities suspect it to be the work of self-styled anarchist groups.
Karachi, 26 Jan. 2007 - A former close aide of Osama bin Laden, who was also a former official with Pakistan's powerful secret service Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) during the 1980s, Khalid Khawaja was allegedly picked up by Pakistan's military intelligence early Friday morning, family sources told Adnkronos International (AKI). A retired Pakistan Air Force squadron leader, Khawaja is currently the chief coodinator of the Islamic Centre for Research and Defence of Human Rights, an organisation which campaigns on the behalf of relatives of terrorism suspects who have "disappeared".
"He went to say his morning prayers in his (Islamabad) neighbourhood mosque and did not come back," Khawajas son Osama Khalid told Adnkronos International (AKI) in a telephone interview. "I spoke to the prayer leader of the mosque but he maintained that Khawaja comes every day to say his prayers but this morning he did not show up," he said.
Khalid Khawaja was a senior official of ISI when it was fuelling jihadi resistance movements against the Soviets in Afghanistan. After being forced to retire from the Pakistan Air Force and the ISI on the instructions of former military dicatator General Zia ul-Haq, he went to Afghanistan and fought alongside with Osama bin Laden.

Report: Thousands of Iranian agents in Iraq
Jan. 26, 2007
Iran has thousands of paid operatives working in neighboring Iraq, an Iranian opposition group based in France said Friday, and it released the names of nearly 32,000 people it alleged were involved.
The National Council of Resistance's allegations could not be independently verified. And a press officer at the Iranian Embassy in Paris, speaking on condition of anonymity because of embassy policy, called the claims "completely false" and said Tehran supports stability in the region.
The council is the political wing of the People's Mujahedeen of Iran, which advocates the overthrow of Iran's Islamic government. The council has been based in France since shortly after the 1979 Islamic revolution.
Mohammad Mohaddessin, who heads the council's foreign affairs committee, alleged that thousands of Iraqis are working on Iran's behalf.

ETA terrorist had 'planned to attack Americas Cup'
26 January 2007
BARCELONA An arrested Eta terrorist was planning to carry out an attack on the Americas Cup planned for Valencia later this year, police said on Friday.
Íker Aguirre Bernadal, 26, was arrested on Thursday on a train between Perpignan and Barcelona carrying bomb-making plans, EUR 3,000 in cash and documents with false identities. Anti-terrorist police sources said Aguirre had been sent to plan an attack on the international yachting regatta by the Basque separatist group's military leader Garikoitz Aspiazu, known as 'Txeroki'.
The Americas Cup is due to start in April and reaches its climax in July. It will be opened by the King of Spain Juan Carlos, who has previously been the target of Eta assassination plots. The competition is expected to attract celebrities and royal families from around the world.
Anti-terrorist sources said it appeared Eta was attempting to set up a 'commando' cell in Spain to carry out bomb attacks on the world's biggest yachting regatta. Agents on the French-Spanish border to stop terrorists entering the country spotted Aguirre, who is wanted in relation to a series of Eta attacks in the Basque Country in 2004.

I'm glad Sec. Chertoff said what he said. Thank you both for posting.
(SomaliNet) Authorities in Kenya said their forces have arrested five men of foreign fighters including a U.S. national and a French national suspected to be fighters for Somalia's defeated Islamist movement, the Kenyan news papers reported.
The five, which are believed to be belonging to Somalia Islamists, were carrying two AK 47 rifles with more than 120 rounds of ammunitions when they were arrested. Others were a Tunisian and two Syrians. A senior police official was quoted as saying a joint security team arrested the men late Wednesday at a border crossing near the Kenyan coastal town of Lamu.
This brings to 18 the number of suspects arrested in the area carrying passports of countries outside the East African region. Kenyan troops on Saturday arrested 13 foreigners carrying American, British and Arabian Gulf passports at Kiunga as they attempted to cross the border from Somalia.
Officers from the Anti-terrorism Police Unit are interrogating the suspects. Government sources said the suspects could be brought to Nairobi for further interrogation. The suspects were handed over to the country's anti-terrorism police to carry out more investigations. "We are doing a background check on the suspects but so far their passports look genuine," the official added.
One of the men was carrying a U.S. passport, two had British passports and the rest carried Syrian, Saudi Arabian and Yemeni passports.
Last week, the Kenyan government deported 34 people suspected to be members of the Islamist movement. The Islamists, who once controlled much of southern and central Somalia, including the capital Mogadishu, have retreated to remote regions near the Kenyan frontier, prompting Nairobi to close its border and lock out thousands of refugees.
Yep, some things you just can't make up.
You're welcome Oorang.
(Now we'll wait the media to jump right on this.)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "This past week, the chief proponent of Jihadi Islam and the use of terror to force people to believe in his religion, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran, traveled to Latin America to create an alliance with three atheistic Communists: Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua, and Rafael Correa of Ecuador.
This emerging "Marxist-Islamist entente," as it has been described, has caught a lot of folks by surprise. How in the world, they ask, could Chavez toast Ahmadinutjob by hailing him as the leader of "a revolution kindred to the Venezuelan revolution: the Islamic revolution."
What could the imposition of atheistic Marxism upon a society, Chavez's goal, have in common with the imposition of a theocracy? The answer must be, can only be for these puzzled folks, the bond of anti-Americanism."

"2 more football players facing charges in racially tinged fight"
Associated Press
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "GREENSBORO, N.C. The parents of three Guilford College football players charged with ethnic intimidation defended their sons today, nearly a week after an on-campus fight between the players and three Palestinian students.
The parents of Michael Bates, Michael Robert Six and Christopher Barnette issued a statement today, asking the public to withhold judgment until an investigation was completed. The statement said Six was attacked with a belt by one of the accusers but didn't offer further details.
"Under our system of government, our sons are presumed innocent of these charges and we hope that the community and the media will let the system run its course in determining their innocence or guilt," the statement said.
Five players face charges of assault and ethnic intimidation in connection with a fight Saturday. The charges do not reflect results of a police investigation.
The charges were approved by a magistrate judge after a complaint was filed by the accusers Guilford College students Faris Khader and Osama Sabbah and North Carolina State student Omar Awartani, who was visiting Greensboro from Raleigh."
