WASHINGTON — Gerald R. Ford leaves his beloved U.S. Capitol for the last time Tuesday as the period set aside for ordinary Americans to say goodbye gives way to an elaborate invitation-only funeral at the awe-inspiring Washington National Cathedral.

As the first order of business Tuesday, Ford's remains were being removed from the Rotunda to lie in repose briefly outside the Senate before leaving the Capitol where Ford served as a congressman for 25 years. As vice president, Ford also had the constitutional title of president of the Senate.

Thanks very much! "Piece Heroique", by Cesar Franck, one of the best composers for the organ, ever. I can't believe someone called it "haunted house music". !!!

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine.
Et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Te decet hymnus, Deus, in Sion,
Et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem
Exaudi orationem meam
Ad te omnis caro veniet.

In paradisum deducant angeli;
in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyrus
et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem.

Chorus angelorum te suscipat
et cum Lazaro, quondam paupere,
aeternam habeas requiem.

Yep, she's traveling a little distance to be there! Her sister is going too, but on the condition that she can hold a sign in support of President Bush. :)

Ever since the Navy Hymn everything is getting to me but seeing the President holding onto Betty Ford was so touching. It was like he was giving her strength to walk down that long aisle of the Cathedral.

When I was in choir, we used to call it "Bum For All the Saints" because of the unexpected rest in the beginning. :)

There are Protestant hymns in our hymnal, including some by John Wesley. We don't seem to sing them very often, though, since our priest is fonder of the 70's hymns which were written by Catholics (probably because he knows them). LOL.

Gerald Ford really knew his hymns, didn't he!!

My dad planned his own funeral, too. Navy Hymn included.
