WASHINGTON — Gerald R. Ford leaves his beloved U.S. Capitol for the last time Tuesday as the period set aside for ordinary Americans to say goodbye gives way to an elaborate invitation-only funeral at the awe-inspiring Washington National Cathedral.

As the first order of business Tuesday, Ford's remains were being removed from the Rotunda to lie in repose briefly outside the Senate before leaving the Capitol where Ford served as a congressman for 25 years. As vice president, Ford also had the constitutional title of president of the Senate.

I took the time to prepare my lunch and came back to the TV as he was talking about Ford wanting the White House Press Corp represented.

Despicable!

The first time I ever heard this was during President Kennedy's funeral. I was 15, and I never forgot it.

As I told a close relative, our grandparents left everything they knew to come to the United States where they would be free to speak their minds without fear of retribution. And where would we all be without Free Republic? We can never thank you enough, Jim Robinson, for giving us all this forum!

I remember that funeral as well; I was 8, and asked my parents what was being said in the Church. They could not really follow it; I am sure they had never seen a Latin Mass in their lives.

If my son wasn't graduating, I would have have gotten up and walked out like some others.

I’ve been trapped like that too! Perhaps it is a common liberal device to use graduation ceremonies that way.

Sheesh. Just got back from the company kitchen to microwave my lunch. Someone had the TV tuned in to ESPN. I promptly changed it to Fox News' coverage of the funeral!

I bet Mrs. Ford is thinking about the man when he was her sailor. So sad.
