South Korean diplomat Ban Ki-moon became the United Nations' eighth secretary-general on New Year's Day as the organization faced a tough array of global issues - from escalating violence in Darfur to the AIDS pandemic.
The 62-year-old career diplomat, who grew up during a war that left his country divided, has promised to make peace with North Korea a top priority.
He will travel there when necessary, he has said, and has cautioned that the reclusive communist nation must be talked to - not just punished with sanctions for its nuclear weapons program.
The United States is certain to press Ban to expand management reforms at the United Nations, which outgoing Secretary-General Kofi Annan began.
The 192-member General Assembly, which controls the U.N. budget and oversees its management, has been reluctant to institute changes that Annan and many experts say are essential to modernize the 61-year-old world body.
In a speech after taking his oath of office Dec. 14, Ban said he will work to build "a more peaceful, more prosperous and more just world for succeeding generations."

He appears to be starting with good intentions. However, how successful he will be in reforming the UN will depend entirely on his ability to stand up to the notoriously corrupt UN bureaucracy and constituent member states.
That being said, he needs to be VERY cautious about the handling of N. Korea. His current rhetoric on this front appears to be sympathetic to N. Korea but only time will tell.

great now this guy get paid

Waaaaayyyy back in 1984, WGST-AM radio in Atlanta (not exactly a hotbed of radical, conservative Americanist philosophy) polled its listening audience and asked the question Is the United Nations doing a good job? 81% responded NO!
So, 23 years later, why the hell are we still involved with one of the most corrupt and liberty-threatening organizations ever invented?
Sounds like a question for YOUR congress critters next TOWN HALL MEETING to me.
Regardless of which individual sits at the top of the UN, the United Nations is a corrupt worldwide bureaucracy that needs demolishing. It can't help but be corrupt. It can't help but attempt to assert power over individual nations, including the U.S. It can't help but attempt to repeal individual rights for the good of the collective. In it's design it is anti-American.
I have no hope that any individual will be able to make the United Nations into a good organization, and I have no desire to see anyone succeed in trying to do so. My only desire is that the United States will withdraw from the UN and let the third world nations squabble over what's left of it.
Sounds like a plan. Are you going to attend?
Well that seems to have worked. Your thread is back.
Since MINE got yanked, I'll make my point again. What is illuminating in THIS article is what the glibs in Seattle consider "a tough array of global issues", "escalating violence in Darfur to the AIDS pandemic."
As if nothing else going on in the world were more important than a 25 year-old-disease and a rear-guard action of Arabo-Islamic Fascists in a desert in the middle of nowhere.
More proof (as if more were needed) that the MSM is completely out of touch with global reality.
Been doing the Town Hall Meeting thing for 30 years.
When Newt was my guy here, he would roll his eyes whenever he saw me at a microphone.
For the last few years, my critter has been CYNTHIA McKINNEY. Not much sense going to HER sessions as they were attended mainly by welfare RECIPIENTS who wouldn't understand the QUESTIONS, let alone the answers.
Back in John Linder's district now so I'll be going back just to keep an eye on John.
Question: Why can't the people of the U.S. either effect a gross revision of the U.N. or disband the body completely and set up a new group made up of democratic nations only?
If we fund them so prolifically, why are we impotent regarding how they behave?
Christians really need to pray for him. He can turn corrupt if he isn't already. Too much power, too much money corrupts. Pray he steers a good course and stays above scandal.
Become a non-profit and then a registered UN NGO. Pick a crisis and start analyzing. If you need a doctorate, hire one.
Peace with North Korea? Good luck! They are all schmucks at the UN.
"So, 23 years later, why the hell are we still involved with one of the most corrupt and liberty-threatening organizations ever invented?"
Because we are a glutton for deceit - in other words, we like to get screwed. It's the globalization game that we have joined to play.
We'll see how out of touch the MSM is over the next few years. IMO, there is an isolationist streak growing in the US, accelerated by our lack of success in Iraq, and the very few allies that understood that Iraq was a central battlefield in the WOT.
As our political leaders search for the fastest (not best) means to get out of Iraq, they will search for other missions for our military, such as UN-led "humanitarian" missions to Sudan.
However, the "elites" have lost an important ally in their plans: conservatives who have steadfastly supported the Bush Administration in the overall conduct of the War on Terror.
When the UN, or NATO, comes to us for assistance, the American people will resoundingly voice their disapproval, as the memories of Iraq will not fade for at least a generation.
